Yeah I feel like some people I know are just going to college "just cause" and don't even know what they're going for...like WTF? why would you spend a ton of money, when you can go to community until you figure it out? Credits transferAnd yeah I know college isn't for everyone, but I actually kinda can't wait for college and school
After I get my community done, and sort some thigns out, I can't wait to move onto a bigger college
I like the idea...meeting new people, experiancing awesome things
Maybe occasionally party, who knows
![]()
But I'm a good student, so I can do that every once in a while ![]()
And thank you
I really like playing with images...my dream is to someday do graphic design for a fashion mag!
I personally had a great college experience but I know a few people who had bad ones b/c it wasn't for them. Everyone is different so you do whatever works best for you ![]()
Meeting new people and experiencing new things are some of the perks of college. And there is nothing wrong with partying. It is important to balance education/work with fun
But try not to fall into the trap of having too much fun b/c you might end up screwing yourself financially. So many people seem to forget they are paying a shitload for college. Each class they skip cost them at least $100 per session. Imagine if they fail out!
I know SOOO many people this has happened to. They ended up regretting it after college b/c of the extra few $1K they owe in loans & etc due to retaking classes and staying extra semesters
And of course there is the other side of not having enough fun. You end up screwing yourself socially and end up not having a well-rounded and fulfilled college experience ![]()
College is riduculously overpriced in my opinion but that is another topic for another time ![]()
If you want to be a graphic designer for a fashion mag then you will (Y)

I sent you the promised PM,you won't be happy with it,
but for my given word to you before,.And really,I'm here to tell you,how are ya?
And to ask you a question,as Admin, are you trying hard to be wise on board when necessary or that's your nature? ![]()

Why would I be unhappy with your PM?
I appreciate your PM and thank you ![]()
I am doing ok. I was suppose to work this long weekend but plans changed so I get to finally relax!
Nonetheless it has been busy at work b/c we just moved locations and the Spring is usually a hectic time. The recent bombings also added an extra layer to the craziness.
If I understood your question correctly, I think you were asking me am I a "wise" person in general or do I behave this way only on boards b/c I am an Admin. Is that correct? First of all, the fact you think I am wise is quite a compliment
I try to be level-headed, rational, thoughtful and understanding in general. The way I see it is, don't be rude, disrespect or a jerk unless it is absolutely necessary. There is a time and place for everything. Use your best judgement and whenever possible try to be at least polite ![]()
However I think it is especially important to be fair and reasonable if you are in an administrative position ![]()

You're welcome.
You don't tell me about work, especially in Spring,so tiring and so busy sceduled, for me we can rest a bit now, summer is near and we can catch our breath.
Bombings?you mean recent USA/Boston bombings,or what? You live in America? seems those bombings were near your neighberhood or near your work, hope all is well now?
Yeah, nearly what I meant, you always seem patient with idiots here, and sometimes you're even funny with them,I've never seen you going crazy with them even sometimes they drive anyone crazy.
Keep your logic in this issue ahead,it's so good. (Y)

You put in your own time, for free even, just to organize the forum like your bedroom and work station. This is busywork that most, including myself, would never volunteer to do. So I thank you for that and your love for the forum. Overall, you're above average as an admin but not perfect.
I grade you a A- !
Even though I ignore most of the forum, at certain places I've seen you inaccurately size up situations in your mind and inappropriately delete or move comments (poster and of even other moderators- I mean, I've seen you go into their comment box and edit & move things around..or edit that poster & moderator's posts so much that they had to change their posting personality) based on your personal discretion, opinion, and individual sense of personal correctness. However, I think you've been doing this less as of late or covering your tracks better.
There should be room for posting personalities that are more provocative than yours, and a little spice & rudeness isn't bad. (really, ya know..) In the end you and the staff are the ones with the power to mold the forum into what you want, but have you entertained the possibility that certain things you find to be unwarranted criticism, politically incorrect, cruel and insulting are not unwarranted criticism, cruel, politically incorrect, and insulting to others? I just think that you don't always get it.
Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assault of thoughts on the unthinking.

We all got to keep ourselves intriguing somehow

I work for a healthcare network. We have a lot of events (classes, clinics, conferences, lectures, etc) during the Spring and Fall.
Yes, the Boston Marathon bombings. The 2 [alleged] bombers lived a mile from my “office”. The bombing site is about 5 miles from where I am currently living. Many of the bombing survivors are getting treatment at my company ![]()
I try to be patient because getting overly upset does not get anything resolved. It is also easier to be attentive, mindful, and objective when you are as calm as possible.
Chances are if I am being extremely “playful” with a member it could mean: A) They are trolling via multiple accounts. B) They are banned members who has returns with a new account thinking they could trick the staff. It’s like we can’t seem to get rid of you might of well have some fun with you until we ban you again..and again… ![]()

I don't recall really editing another staff member's post except maybe to piggy back on their point. I trust the other staff member's judgement regarding how something should be handled. Most of the time I edit stuff other members report.
I will keep what you said in mind.

I had asked a few and I was curious as to your answer. How many languages do you speak total? One of my Chinese friends is now angry with me because she found out that I speak Japanese and not Chinese despite not knowing any Japanese people
. I only learned Japanese so that I could watch anime without subtitles
plus I found it much easier to learn. On top of that, most Chinese Americans my age speak English anyway. It probably would come in handy for vacations though.
Currently just one
I used to know how to speak Cantonese but I haven't spoken in awhile. I have pretty much forgotten most of it
I can still understand most Cantonese conversations but speaking it is a challenge for me. As for Mandarin, I took 3 years of it in college but b/c I rarely use it I have forgotten most it. Spanish I took 3 years in high school. I can still understand some b/c of all the Spanish speakers around me ![]()
Japanese is a tough language. Isn't there like 2 or 3 phonetic systems? The fact you know how to speak it is quite a feat
I have noticed a lot of anime fans are interested in learning Japanese and a lot of people martial arts fanatic are interested in learning Chinese.
Are you thinking about visiting Asia in the near future? ![]()

As long as you don’t listen to country music when I am around it is all good (Y) Electronic music (mainly trance) is my favorite genre of music but most dubstep is wannabe crap :yuckky:
I am starting to unable to see the shelf again b/c of all the crap on it
Roadside Barf Service....lol...you should totally start a business and patent the idea!

Well, even though you forgot a lot, it is good that you can still understand at least. Of course, even to have forgotten Cantonese or Mandarin would have been a feet for me since I gave up on both rather quickly
. Of course, not having anyone to speak it to played a part as you mentioned or as the use it or lose it cliché goes.
-
That is true about the phonetic systems, but I can't actually write in the traditional calligraphy at all
. I can recognize some isolated words like fire, food, ect. but I can't actually write a sentence with proper grammar. As to the traveling thing, I've always wanted to go to Japan as I've always found it interesting. At first going to Korea was something I never thought about, but after the 'little Korea' in California's good food, I became curious about the real thing. I've wanted to go to Beijing ever since the Olympics ceremony
. Of course, seeing the great wall, Shaolin temple and such would be nice. There was also a historian woman on this history channel program called 'The Story of All of Us' who gave a really stirring account of the Ming Dynasty and made me curious about seeing any remnants of that. Do you do any traveling for VS? Also, speaking of VS and stirring narrations, have you ever met the woman who narrates the commercials? I hope she's still employed by them anyway.

About Mandarin:
A few semesters of college courses is far from enough from learning Mandarin, which is most time consuming of all the major languages to learn. The reason being, of course, is the non-intuitive nature of the Chinese language- you have to memorize a huge array of patterns that don't overlap nearly enough. It is also, linguistically, very different from english so people without real talent for learning languages will have big trouble.
Romance languages are a piece of cake compared to Mandarin. It is also very easy to forget Chinese- My dentist is Chinese and immigrated to the US to study dentistry. She told me that she had forgotten so much Chinese that she was no longer able to read very well!
When I took Chinese in college, I was surprised at the way it was taught. I had studied chinese (very seriously and was a straight A- student, not a dilettante) for 8 years beforehand and I had won medals for several regional Chinese vocabulary contests.
So while the otherwise rigorous college courses were easy & very good practice for me, I personally suspected that one could pass these courses and then immediately forget all the rote memorization and vocabulary. There are nationally recognized language certification exams that one can take to exhibit proof of language proficiency (for CVs) but I looked at the testing methods and I quickly realized that they were flawed ways to demonstrate language competence.
It's really a pedagogical challenge to teach Chinese. I memorized a few hundred words a year and many thousands by the time I took my last class, but a lot of these words have evaporated out of my mind due to lack of use. A while ago, I wrote in Baron's thread that I hoped to learn Chinese for business purposes better but it's easier said than done.
I just don't have time to read & study chinese everyday, and I don't live in Beijing...I have other priorities. Unlike me, my ex happened to work in China for three years and she was able to really complete her competence with Mandarin and the chinese. (her native language is German). Nevertheless, my Chinese speaking skills are still solid, and have somewhat fused within my mind due to the fact that I was lucky enough to learn Chinese & English at the same time, and had done so early on in my life.

Speaking of Mandarin, wow did Marvel eff up the Madarin in Iron Man 3! Whoops, fanboy moment.

Sounds like a deal, I have some noise cancelling earphones just in case that one song does hit the airwaysOh my, glow sticks and all?
Ahaha, was just a matter of time eh? Hmmm, this gives me an idea now. We have freaking iRobots that vacuum carpets, clean floors, even clean the dam gutters! I think its time I invented the first ever iRobot to clean shelves, I could make a good penny out of you
I would but I'm investing my money on the iRobot shelf thingy now so make sure to take a scrunch the next time you decide to get inebriated
Oh, and how was your past 3-day weekend?
Ok, I guess Carrie Underwood isn't too bad for a country artist. I could kinda stand her music ![]()
Yes, glowsticks back in the days. Now, not so much. Partying in Ibiza is definitely on my bucket list (Y)
There are iRobots that clean gutters? :notsure: I did not know that! Even if there's an iRobot to clean shelves I wouldn't be able to afford it
I couldn't even afford a regular iRobot!
I don't think I will be moving out of Broke-Ass Mountain anytime soon ![]()
That's exactly why I always have a hair tie with me esp when I go drinking. Puke and the disgusting stuff on toilets in you hair is not sexy!!! :x
I had a nice long weekend. Originally i was suppose to work but plans changed. So I was able to "catch up" on some sleep and TV ![]()
How was your long weekend? ![]()

I tried taking Greek and Latin college as part of my Classical Civ minor elective. Didn't work out
I agree, with most stuff you learn if you don't apply it frequently enough you pretty much lose it. Overpriced education--->down the toilet! ![]()
No, the only traveling I did while w/ VS was to Ohio. I wasn't high enough on the ladder to go anywhere fancy. And no I have never met the "British" woman who does the voice-overs
She still does some work for VS. Definitely less after the revamping that happened a few years ago.
BTW, everytime I see a squirrel I think of you
Not sure do you still like them ![]()

Well, I imagine you retained the parts of that education you actually need in your every day life
. My use for the Greek language came as a result of having a love of their history and culture early on, but I have no applicable use for speaking it on a regular basis
. The only Greek people I've met here speak English.
Speaking of revamping, I saw some videos of their castings for the show (which I didn't previously know were available to the general public) and saw some pretty big name models getting turned down. I wonder if that's hard on the ego
.
I do still love squirrels, although believe it or not, I've never been stung by a bee (even when harvesting pollen and honey) or bitten by a dog but have actually been bitten attacked by squirrels
. They are definitely friendlier in some places than others and different species have different temperaments. I do still love them though
. It seems that I likewise think of you when I see pink bunnies
.
*edit* It seems the visual example of this (Kemp Muhls pink bunny video) has eluded me and in its place I found out that she's a singer now
.

Yeah definetly its different for everyone...some its better than high school, others worse! I know the work load will be 10 times bigger..but like you said the perks of meeting new people, experiancing new things, makes the work all worth it! And yeah I know too many who don't take college seriously, party then flunk right out
I find its usually those whose parents are paying for their whole education! ![]()
but so far I think I will do good in college as far as debt comes along..I've always had to work for my money, etc, and I plan on working big time everytime I'm not in class. Also relying on scholarhsips, etc.
And thanks for the encouraging words. I wish fashion wasn't so freaking hard to break into ![]()

Here, let me re-quote it since I've never seen any of my posts turned into links...:

No, you've done it before, know who it is, and I've seen it several times ![]()
Thank you then.

The purpose of my post was to tell you that you should protect yourself and be thinking more from the for-profit employer's perspective as in 'how can I use you? What relevant skills do you have? ' If you can figure out and do something to serve this difficult question out early on, you will get closer to doing what you want to do sooner than you would otherwise assume.
You should also be thinking from your own perspective, as to 'what kind of person do I want to be?' 'What should I do to become this person?'
Universities are entities that don't exist for your sake. They exist to provide you, their customer, a service and procure labor for their clients: corporate employers, non-profits, government agencies, their faculty, and other stakeholders. They mold their educational programs accordingly. This means that they leave out a great deal by necessity and retain what is only in their stakeholder's short term interest. They'll force you to take courses and do things that add little value to yourself, and much value to them. You'll be spending a lot of time doing 'make-work' or 'busy-work' of little long term value. You will learn how certain processes work, and how to use marketing software but there is inadequate historical, psychological, sociological, statistical, interdisciplinary, or strategic education even at the most selective programs.
For instance, if you earn a marketing degree... most of those courses are designed to ease in a graduate into work and not all that well, really. I believe that undergraduates only need 5 to 7 very basic marketing courses to get that degree and it doesn't impart graduates with very much at all.
You can do 6 years education from an ivy league university, get a high GPA & great extracurriculars, expand your network, get a job at a good company and come out as an inadequately educated and mentally conscious individual (the whole point of higher education for the upper classes in the 19th and early 20th century..,,and of which has been long lost..). In fact, many, if not most experience this fate.
And thanks for the encouraging words. I wish fashion wasn't so freaking hard to break into
PS. I hope this doesn't sound too unpleasant but I felt obligated to voice this perspective.

^I get what your saying, and I get your perspective, and believe me, I've done my research on college, what employers want etc. And I quite enjoy learning actually...its funny, in my school, I had so few teachers that acutally cared about learning...but then came this one, a student teacher, and he was the coolest guy ever, and he brought so much knowledge into everything he said and did! I got so much from him...he said something like this "Your brain is like a sponge. You need to be able to suck up all the information you can, and you can spit out what you don't like"
And I was jsut so amazed by that, it really stuck with me. Teenagers I'm around are ignorant, refuse to see other perspectives, and they could adhere to this advice.
Anywho as far as gettign a job, I've seen that alot of it, almost all of it, is networking, who you know, impressions, etc. Thats why i'm trying to leave the best first impressions I can ![]()
