Just a random question for anyone who knows... But what exactly makes a plus size model? Reason I'm asking is sometimes I see models who look almost the same size as Kate Upton and they are considered plus size.... but then Kate Upton is not considered plus size. For example, Robyn Lawley is labeled a plus size model, but not Kate. So sometimes I scratch my head at that. I mean it's pretty obvious what category models fit into when they are skinny or noticeably big.... but it's the ones in the middle I'm talking about.

I wish I knew...but I suspect it is anything that diverges from the basic skinny, delicate boned, & tall archetype that is used everywhere in modeling.  The 'plus sized' models are bigger boned.

Kate Upton....when she started modeling she was as thin as someone like her could be but had big breasts.   I don't think she has bone structure as 'husky' as Robin.  She is in between. Afterwards, she gained weight.   I think she only did bikini stuff, commercial, and 'personality' oriented editorials.  She never did HF type modeling.

Hmmph, I haven't.  I did check to see what it was, and I know that type of movie.   It looks like his break-in role as an actor.

^ thanks for your response. I've never seen Kate labeled as plus size.... even on most agency sites they have sections strictly for the plus size models. Kate is always lumped into the "normal" size. (For lack of a better name)

Yeah it's a movie that scored him his first Oscar nomination. Many people feel he should have won for that role... he was that good.

It's such a heartfelt movie, rather simple plot.... but I thought it was brilliantly made.

Oh, I see what you mean!  It may be because Robyn was a noise maker.  Robyn was not just a model, but some kind of plus sized lifestyle media personality that appeared in magazines & tv well before SI.

Kate was a model, and not loud IIRC.

Ah, I see.  Robyn is really tall/big woman although not out of shape at all.  I always found it a bit odd that Kate, although a full-on model didn't keep her weight down but still got jobs and left and right for quite some time.  She seemed to be gaining weight every year of her career.  Models who broke discipline like she did tended to lose jobs- I'm thinking of Erin Heatherton here...!

Good insight about the oscar campaigning.  It does seem like a bunch of politics, and for me (not being in the loop) whoever wins does seem somewhat independent of the performance. 

Playing a difficult role (like a disabled person, or an iconic character) however has always looked like a potential path to at least an oscar nomination- for instance it does seem that raising awareness for certain types of disorders, and even social issues is beneficial for the filmmaking community.

Though I don't think that had to do with why leo lost, sometimes it just comes down to who has the best Oscar campaigning. Plus they probably didn't want to reward a 19 year old new comer just yet.

 

^ I know. Kate almost broke down barriers in a way. She doesn't have your typical model built but after SI, she landed major covers like Vogue. And an American one to be exact, which is very hard for today's models to land. She also got an American Elle cover I believe. And several other big time covers. She never did high fashion or anything like that before. And that was when she was actually a model. These days she ssems more celebrity/ actress type.

There's just something about Kate that propelled her above the rest and gave her celebrity status. She didn't even have to date a celeb/ associate with big time celebs to do it, which is pretty impressive. It was all her personality. And even when she made it big with the YouTube vids and such .... overall social media still wasn't as big as it is today.

Cara Delevigne is another one. She's kinda short/ odd for a model... but it's her quirky personality that has made her into one of the top models. It's that personality that has won her so many social media followers too. She's like an icon of sorts these days. Though now she does hang with the Kendall Jenner types too which usually helps too but without them I think she'd still be big.

Yeah I wasn't aware of the whole campaigning thing... but these last few years it's become super obvious to me. I drives me crazy, let's just say I'm not a fan of the Academy lol.

Also when it comes to the Hollywood walk of fame, they don't just award celebs who they deem best fit to get one... the celeb actually has to go out of their way to agree to get one/ sign up for one and they have to commit to attending the ceremony. That's why Leo DiCaprio doesn't have a star on the walk of fame because clearly he is a big enough and accomplished enough star to get one, but Leo himself couldn't be bothered.

Oh indeed.  It is interesting that no one has reappeared to do the same thing again.  She is from a very wealthy clan in the US that a cynic may point to as influencing her past successes.

Kate to me has a very "all american" sort of look, and I think what makes her stand out was that she was classic in the face (comparisons with Marilyn Monroe were common), but also quite tall (she seems around 6').  Added to that was her super voluptuous body shape and her very big breasts.  When she first did SI, she looked great but then she quickly lost weight discipline- and gained it around her waistline.  Then it made her literally the only working model that deviated from the usual body standards. 

She has a face that can appear in movies with broad appeal, which also made her stand out I believe.  She isn't like..say an edgy HF face that only people like me (lol) would like.

I still think that she looked her very best at the beginning of her career, and should have maintained this type of physique!  I think she would have become a bigger star than she currently is.

Yeah connections always helps too. Gigi Hadid comes to mind as well. Then Kendall Jenner lol! This girl is walking all the top shows during fashion week... landing prestigious modelling campaigns. Without the Kardashian association I honestly doubt she'd have the modelling career she has now. Not hating but that's hyst what I honestly feel. What's your opinion on Kendall?

Kate looks great in those pics. I think she branched away from modelling correct? I remember hearing how she switched agencies and it looked like a move to further her acting career or something. Can't remember.

What do you think of Kelly's latest Yu Tsai pics?

At first I thought shed just stick to bikini/ lingerie modelling... and not do anything that looks relatively edgy.

I still don't see her as the HF type though. I don't expect to see her on Vogue covers or getting major high fashion campaigns. But you never know. Some people said the same of Kate Upton etc

So I just realized Hailey is working for VS pink (yes I'm late... I don't really visit her thread.... I just randomly saw her VS Pink pic on Instagram) Glad VS is working with her... but Id love her 100 times more for the mainline. She'd outshine all the other mainline models in my eyes.

But speaking of VS Pink, I can totally see Camila Morrone working for them!
