I really loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - especially for the human aspects showed in there - like you had this bunch of kids and every and each of them was punished for their "sins" - and that the poorest and humblest kid from them has won everything. I know it´s an old story and many call it "cliché" - but I think it´s vital for children to see such movies and learn what the moral principles are really like - or more, what they should be like.

Chocolate factory was a symbolism, it was a fair place in an unfair world. The movie was about everything good in humans (sharing the last piece of chocolate) and about everything bad in humans (nasty and spoiled kids and their parents) - it was a mirror of this society with a dreamy happyend.

^Oh, I loved the book - it was one of my favourites as a kid (well, Dahl in general). As a morality tale it's great. And I liked the 70s Gene Wilder film version... Maybe that's why I didn't take to this one so much?

I suppose I was as similarly find of the Planet Of the Apes series of films too. Although I'm no 'remake-basher'!

But, yeah, all go and see This Must Be The Place. Heartily recommended.

Hey there, watched "Dark Shadows" this evening and looooved it! It was so funny The only objection was it being too short, I could've easily stayed for more. But well, I'm a fan girl, don't count on me for an impartial critic

And Michelle Pfeiffer's beauty is really out of this world

I also loved Charlie and the Choclate Factory. And Planet of the Apes, Helena was superb in it.

I've been hammering Beach House and Best Coast over the past few days

I've been known to hesitate in checking out follow-ups to albums I really love but I bit the bullet on both yesterday. 'Bloom' is mostly terrific thus far, though I'm struggling with the Best Coast one a little. It seems in trying to highlight the best thing about the band (Bethany's voice) they also unwittingly highlighted the worst thing (the lyrics). Still, early days yet.

It's pretty cold here at the moment, but it still feels warm and summery with Best Coast

Also, Spotify finally got released in Australia this week, so I've been loving that over the past few days

I adored the 70s version growing up - it's an absolute classic. I don't think the remake will get anywhere near that status, but I enjoyed it all the same. It's good when remakes start from a different and fresh interpretation from the source material, rather than taking cues from previous attempts, which I think is something Burton did pretty well with Charlie as well as Alice

Well there you go

Didn't you feel like almost all the characters were incredibly underdeveloped? Maybe you didn't notice if you were familiar with them all from the original series

^Perhaps that is it's fault? Is it a "fanboy" thing, CarMELita?

Did you even get the show in Australia, donbot? I know we didn't in either Argentina or the UK. I'd heard of it - in that it was a oddity, being this US soap-opera but having a vampire in the middle of it! And when I saw that Tim Burton was making a film of it I was intrigued at first but, mainly, I just didn't think that the trailer was very good at all.

Next week though: PROMETHEUS!!!

Hey Don,

I was wondering if you could clean up this avatar for me w/ your photoshop tools? I mean, when I shrink it to avatar size, the quality kind of suffers. The dimensions and everything are good, though.

I have no idea - I'd never heard of the show before the movie. I assumed it was an Addams family type show, but it was more of a soap opera?

It's not out 'til the 7th over here, but it's still tantalisingly close

^Damned 'Queen's Jubilee' puts a stop to my plans. I hate going to the cinema when there's a national holiday - place is always full of ingrates and fuckwits who just go because it's something to do... whatever.gif

So I'm going to have to wait until after Wednesday now, so I can sit and watch in peace - and not be bothered by people with no cinema-etiquette or social skills! 1062-wine.gif

Well Danni

Oh, don't get me started on those people.

I've already got my advance ticket for next week. I haven't been this excited for a movie in a long time

I just hope you're not going to tell me it was a disappointment

Hate to be a buzzkill, but I d/led' the Russian CAM and read the imdb forums (full of complaints) /storyline to save a potential trip to the theater (after hearing that it was a *** out of ***** film.) The trailers got me pumped' up, but the intel changed my mind :-/

I've skimmed through the CAM, and watched all the major setpieces...I don't think I'm going to watch it in theaters. It seems to have good cinematography, though.

A few things I've noted: -

Wow, the 'Engineer', the alien astronaut, is very disappointing.

There seems to be very serious plot holes that revolve around the alien creatures (Engineer, cuddles, alien cobra). A complete lack of explanation.

David F. seems pretty amazing, and I've heard that he's the best thing in Prometheus.

Hopefully, when you guys see the film and enjoy it, my casual judgement will be proven wrong The consensus seems to be the fact that it's modestly enjoyable, but has teething problems that make it a forgettable film compared to Alien and Aliens.

Prometheus is a must see for me, I´ve already promised fl we´re going

Alice in Wonderland is one of my favourite things in the world - conceptually as well as all its various interpretations and incarnations. The Disney cartoon is one of my favourite movies

Remember that artist I linked in your thread the other day Camille Rose Garcia? She did the illustrations for a run of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland books a couple of years ago. I have a copy, and it's pretty amazing

Also, is "Goldie" Heather Graham's nickname?

No I have no idea why I did write Goldie, so do not ask

That video is dreamy - such great illustrations Alice is so precious, she reminds me of Ofelia (Fauns´ Labyrinth) - but more on the bright side as Ofelia´s world was a dark one. But the fantasy is still the same

I just saw This Must Be the Place too on the weekend Baron. Great recommendation indeed (Y)

So strange, but incredibly captivating and quite touching.
