Yeah, TR '90 was loosely based on a short story by Philip K. Dick called 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale', which I read as a teenager. I'm not always one for reading everything by a particular author, but I'd just finished 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?' (which of course was cited as the main inspiration of 'Blade Runner') and I decided to dip into a book of his collected short stories afterwards. Basically, Douglas has false memories of some exciting adventure on Mars implanted, but while working on him, they uncover real memories of him actually going to Mars and getting involved in something top secret. There are layers of real memories suppressed and false memories implanted, and consequently, there's so much going on in his mind that he becomes unhinged. Perhaps appropriately, my memories of the story's finer points are a bit vague these days, but I really enjoyed it at the time.

Are you interested in neuroscience and the sciences of memory? I know a little. Overall, It's one of those subjects that I intend to tackle some day for my personal benefit. I'd like to understand memories better than I already do.

I've always found myself drawn to those kind of themes in books and movies but beyond the world of fiction, it's not something I've ever really explored in any great detail. I'd like to, though.

Hey Don

I was wondering if you'd seen this vid, citing Tom Waits as the inspiration for Heath Ledger's Joker?

He certainly wouldn't have been the first actor to use a rock star as inspiration for a character, but I guess it just goes to show that everything is improved if you add the influence of Tom Waits.

I found it a weird coincidence that they both had roles in 'The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus' too, though I can't actually remember if they shared any scenes in the movie.

No, me neither

I've heard JCVD does disappointingly little in it, which kinda sucks. I used to love his movies.

I'm really itching to see Moonrise Kingdom too

^

He's one of those actors that never fully envelops a character (or rather, lets a character fully envelop him) - there's just too much Bruce Willis to get past <_<

He's shown a bit in certain performances like 12 Monkeys and The Sixth Sense, but yeah for the most part, he just brings out his usual bag of tricks. Unlike other actors in that same category though, I do find him eminently likeable/watchable, so it doesn't really bother me. It's always a treat when an actor can break out of their usual shtick and surprise you with a performance though.

Anderson is one of my absolute favourite filmmakers, and I'm glad for the reassuring tick of approval

^He gets a lot of leeway because he's John fucking McClane! :blueeyedbaby:

That, and David Addison, gives him kudos, although he's ridden his luck on that a few times (Look Who's Talking, The Whole Nine Yards, Armageddon :yuckky: ).

Hmmm... Here's another bunch of chancers pissing over some treasured childhood movie memories. This time: RoboCop. <_<

What do we think of this? Spot the Batman influence too.

Looks like Batman meets Snake Eyes.

No Paul Weller lips = No RoboCop

No Paul Weller voice, particularly his pronounciation of "trouble" = No RoboCop

No shiny pearl blue pecs and head = No RoboCop

No Paul Verhoeven sensibilities = No RoboCop

No 80s vision of the future = No RoboCop

I'm willing to say it looks lame as shit, based on that one photo

And yeah, Pies :yuckky:

Don't worry though, the Hawks will smash them even if they get past Sydney

Happy to see 4 Eagles made the All Australian team though, including captain Glassy!

Put me down as another 'Moonrise Kingdom' fan (and a fellow Wes Anderson devotee). The central characters somehow seemed unique to the island they lived on, which I just loved.

To be fair, there's not much damage left to be done to the Robocop franchise after the third installment and the TV series, but I think if there's one cause for optimism about the remake, it's the cast. The guy from the US version of 'The Killing' (who looks rather like a white Snoop Dogg) is the one inside the suit, with Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Jackie Earle Haley (amongst others) in support. Not too keen on the new get-up though, I must say. It looks like a sort of rubbery, rubbish cast-off from another superhero film, and more insect-like than robotic. Any chance a more imposing suit of armour will be placed over the top in post-production?

I actually never 'really' saw Robocop. I only saw parts of it. The scene with the toxic acid gave me childhood nightmares..

As for the suit, it's probably not the final version. A stuntman? Look at his right hand! Will they float CGI on top of him or what?

He looks like a new superhero- I'll call him 'Antman!' lol.

This is the best possible angle for these two models:

I think that Heath Ledger drew his inspiration from a variety of known sources. The Joker was an amalgamation. I definitely see:

1. Marlon Brando- Colonel Kurtz

2. Clockwork Orange (big inspiration)

3. Rock stars (I don't know the specifics, but it seems to be the case)

4. Hannibal Lector

5. Gary Oldman's roles, particularly his role in 'The Professional' and 'Hannibal'

6. Perhaps some insights from studying the mentally ill. The Joker's overactive tongue probably came from this, but I can't say for sure.

7, Jack Nicholson-The shining, the joker, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, and others.

8. 'Whatever doesn't kill us simply makes us stranger' is a play on Nietzsche's quote: 'That which does not kill us simply makes us stronger'.

Do any of you guys like Judge Dredd? The comics are actually quite funny/creative, and I like the 'best of' compilation volumes. I'm not going to see Dredd 3-D, though. But I'll d/l the cam when it hits the web.

^They'd better 'chrome' the shit out of it for it to be in anyway as glam-tastic as the original. To be honest, my favourite bit was the guy melting at the end (and then getting squished by a car). '80s special effects have a quaint charm...

Ugh, they better not touch The Goonies.

Oh lord, I hope not! There are certain movies that are practically crying out to be remade - I mean, I've always thought something like Cleopatra comin' atcha (to name one) would warrant another outing, since a grittier tone would be more suited to it's themes of betrayal, love and war - but I shudder at the thought of childhood favourites like Goonies, Ghostbusters or Back to the Future being 'updated' one day.

As a young kid, I remember being really quite scared of Vigo the Carpathian, of 'Ghostbusters II' fame. I've watched it back many a time since, and wondered what on earth I was thinking.

From what I've been reading, it seems the above Robocop image is just one of about half a dozen suit transformations. The first one is going to be something akin to the original 80s style armour, which will be ridiculed and labelled as outdated and clunky (to the delight of long term fans, I'm sure ), while the final one will apparently be similar to (gulp) a Transformers robot. My guess is that the insect-like get-up will pop up in the middle.

I'm not at all educated in the Dredd universe, but I've only heard good things about the movie so far. Might wait for the DVD though, since I'm not massively taken with seeing movies in 3D.
