Not for a little while - I've got a ticket to Arctic Monkeys, but that's not 'til May. And there's Laneway Festival in Feb, which should be good (Haim, Chvrches, Lorde, Warpaint, ...)

How about you?

Wow, Laneway sounds rather epic. I’ve recently seen Arctic Monkeys, The Strypes, Willy Mason, Local Natives and Tim Burgess, all of whom were really good, and I'm formulating a little plan to see Anna Calvi in February. Apart from that, my calendar is looking pretty empty at the moment.

Speaking of calendars, I'm guessing new year greetings are already in order for you guys.   Don't tell me what happens though, I like to be surprised.

Afternoon sir, it's always a pleasure to see you swing by the forum!

I'm afraid I don't have a last.fm account - can you recommend it? Nice choices though, I particularly like the Milo Greene one. That kind of cinematic pop sound is pretty difficult to beat when it's done right.

Laneway is my favourite festival by far - it always has an amazing lineup

Tim Burgess - funny, I only know one song of his "Oh My Corazon" because it was in the playlist rotation during Ricky Gervais's XFM show in 2003

It was good though - I'll look up some more

I haven't seen this for ages, but here is Jack Nicolson as the Joker.

I must say that he's more like the comic book one than Ledger.   This one has his charms and looks more like he's having fun.

The difference in which Soviet/Eastern european prisoners were treated by the Germans was like night and day.  Most Soviet prisoners were killed in a few months or executed on the spot, while Allied pilots & prisoners got imprisoned in accordance with most of the terms laid down by the Geneva Convention and so forth...They even got Red Cross Aid sometimes.

I remember 'The Great Escape'.  The real situation of which it was based on was about castle where Allied pilots/pows were being held and some of the prisoners were caught several times trying to escape.  Did you know that the Germans called captured pilots 'Luft-gangsters?' Hah.

My favorite prison film is 'Papillion'.  I saw several times when I was very small (always at my uncle's house, or watching re-runs).  The imagery was etched into my young memory and it had an impact.

My recent orders, for reference:

Concrete Hell: Urban warfare from Stalingrad to Iraq
From Don to the Dneiper
Hitler's Greatest Defeat: The collapse of Army Group Center, June 1944

I may give some of these a look at some point. Incidentally, I've just been given a WWII-related book to read called 'The Real Great Escape' by Guy Walters - I'm about one third of the way through so far and it's not bad, although there's a distinct lack of motorbikes and Steve McQueen  . The central character is Roger Bushell (played by Richard Attenborough as 'Roger Bartlett' in the movie). He and his fellow prisoners face daily dilemmas on whether to sit tight and see out the war as POWs or 'do their duty' by trying to escape and thus, occupying German troops and contributing to the allies' war effort, which makes for a pretty interesting read.

Oh heck, and I'm even later to reply!

I must say, I've never really been that big on New Year's. I've always really enjoyed Christmas, and I tend to think NYE represents the end of the seasonal festivities and the beginning of the freezing cold and seemingly never ending month of January. How did yours go?

Some of the stuff I'm seeing on TV about the current drought in California looks awful, hope you're not being affected.

I will admit to not having heard an awful lot of Tim’s solo stuff, though I was a huge Charlatans fan when I was much younger. Quite honestly, I only really went to the gig on a whim, but I'm glad I did. It was nice mixture of old and new songs and he’s a much better singer than I would have ever given him credit for.

Btw,I checked the English Premier League few weeks ago,I was shocked to see Man United ranking 6th or 7th after some even unknown teams to me.have I missed something about Man United? or is it something temporary?I always see it to be the best English team.

Yeah, it's a bit bizarre to see them placed so low in the league, isn't it? They still have more or less the same players as last year, who were plenty good enough to win the league easily; the problem is that they've changed the manager and the coaching staff, and they've already lost seven games this season, which would have been totally unthinkable for them in years gone by. They'll urgently need to improve and strengthen the squad this January if they're to stop their current half-season slump becoming a long-term decline.

Hopefully that improvement doesn't start right away though, they're playing against my team in the League Cup semi final tomorrow evening.

It's pretty difficult to make a case for Batman '89 comparing favourably with, say, The Dark Knight, but it was certainly an enjoyable movie in an era when comic book adaptations were still something of a Hollywood punchline. It seems both Burton flicks are unfairly maligned these days, which I think is a bit of a shame; it wasn't his fault the subsequent (and very iffy) Joel Schumacher efforts were billed indirectly as sequels.

I will admit to remembering Arnold's infinite barrage of ice puns rather fondly, though.

You know, I think it's about time I re-watch 'The Dark Knight' and watch 'The Master' (have you seen it?  I love 'There will be Blood' and the director.  I also like Terrance Malick).

I made a thread  about 'The Master' in 2012 on BZ but I totally forgot to watch the movie..I've been told that it is a series of superbly constructed scenes.  As a movie, however, it comes across as disjointed but it's a superior film.

As for Batman, I read the comics a bit more since 2012 and overall Jack Nicholson character was more like Joker.  No matter what he was doing, he was having fun- even to the death.  I enjoyed the batman 89' scenes but overall 89' is intentionally cartoony rather than engrossing.

In retrospect, Ledger's Joker could have been any nihilist anarchist- just like a reverse version of 'V' from 'V from Vendetta' and the nutters from 'A Clockwork Orange'.  His role has become a cult icon, but now that I think of it...the real Joker from the comic would never scowl as much as ledger did.

Better late than never right?

Hmm, well as seeing that we don't have any cold freezing winters here as you and many parts of the USA do I guess that means we have more to cheer about? I had quite the good time for New Years here. We managed to head out to a friends house who lives near by for a nice celebration. That friend of mine is the go to guy it seems like for events and a proper good time For instance just before the new year struck all the men had a shot of tequila and the women a lemon wedge in their mouths. Once midnight hit the guys took the shot of tequila and then all the couples meet for a sour kiss and beginning

Ah yes the seemingly persistent drought conditions. We haven't been affected here that much to be honest other than a request from our governor for ALL California's to reduce water consumption by 20%, not mandatory yet but that could change in a few short months Luckily our county has done well over the past years in building water recycling plants and programs to restore under ground water sources and making sure we have enough for dry years such as those affecting us now. The true victims of these current drought conditions are farmers in the central valley of California who are pleading with the state for more water due to a measly fish holding back a critical supply to many farmers for the fact it is an endangered fish. I'm all for preserving nature and wildlife but these tree hugging, granola eating, whack job environmentalist have gone too far with putting fish over people

I've yet to see 'The Master', unfortunately, but I do plan on giving it a shot. From what I understand, it's rather more of a character study than a cohesive story, and it requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate the various themes and subtexts.

Yeah, as is the case with most Tim Burton films, 'Batman' has that cartoonish and slightly artificial sheen to it, but it's also slick, stylish and just generally good fun to watch. I see it as a kind of middle point between the ludicrous but wildly entertaining TV series with Adam West, and the grim, epic Nolan saga.

Probably not, though I do think both Nicholson and Ledger made brilliant Jokers. Jack I guess went in more for 'comic book crazy', Heath went in for outright anarchist, but they were perfect villains for the films they were in. I often used to wonder what it would be like if they were able to switch roles, imagine Nicholson in 'The Dark Knight' or Ledger delivering the line “ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” or dancing to the sounds of Prince. Well, perhaps not that last part.

Note to self - that's how one does new year!

Good hear to hear you've not been affected too much, I've seen so much news footage of the massively contrasting conditions across the States lately. Lots of stuff about the effects of the polar vortex, of course; most notably the freezing conditions at Niagara Falls. Looked a bit like a scene from 'The Day After Tomorrow' - but without the man-eating wolves, obviously. There were a lot of people suffering from flooding over here until recently, though the catchily titled 'quasi-biennial oscillation' didn't really make it as far as the northeast - indeed, neither did the heavy snowfall we were promised in early December. I wouldn't be surprised if we got some in the next month or so though. I just ordered myself a new winter coat, which is at the ready as we speak!

Nothing so formal! Just wondering if it's worth opening an account of my own. Is it always so handy for discovering new stuff, or more of a place to store your existing favourites?
