terrific wisdom about fame- written 2,000 years ago:

"moral excellence comes from habit"

"suffering becomes beautiful when anyone bears dire calamities with cheerfulness, not through insensitivity but through greatness of mind"

"It is during our darkest moments when we must focus to seek the light"

"what could be more foolish than a man who’s afraid of words? Our friend Demetrius6 often says that the words of the ignorant issue from the same place as the rumblings of their guts. “What matter to me,” he says, “whether they sound off from up top or from down below?” It’s altogether mad to fear being disgraced by the disgraceful."

"But you do know, at least, how many have found death helpful; how many it has released from tortures, poverty, lamentation, punishments, fatigue. We are in no one’s power, if death is in our power."

"" Death is the undoing of all our sorrows, an end beyond which our ills cannot go; it returns us to that peace in which we reposed before we were born. If someone pities the dead, let him also pity those not yet born." Seneca, Essay: To Marcia

Dear Lucilius,

Let’s cease to want what we wanted. For my part, I arrange things such that, being an old man, I don’t want the same things I did as a child. My days have this one goal, as do my nights; this is my task and my study, to put an end to old evils. I make it so that my day is a small version of my whole life. I don’t, by Hercules, grab at it as though it were my last one, but I look upon it as though it could be my last. Indeed I’m writing this letter now as though death were coming to call for me in the very midst of writing it; I’m ready to depart. I enjoy my life thus far because I don’t spend too much time measuring how long all this will remain.

Before I became old, I took care to live well; in old age I take care to die well. And dying well means dying willingly. ... Let’s compose our minds such that we want whatever the situation demands, and in particular that we contemplate our end without sadness. We must prepare for death before life. Our life is well furnished, yet we’re greedy for its furnishings; something always seems to be lacking, and always will. It’s not years nor days, but the mind, that determines that we’ve lived enough. I, my dearest Lucilius, have lived as much as is enough. Full, I await my death.

Farewell. (Epistle 61)

Make haste to live, Lucilius, and think each of your days to be an individual life. The man who accustoms himself to this way of thought, for whom life is complete each day, is free of worry; but to those who live for hope, each moment, as it draws near, slips away, and in steals greediness and, the thing most wretched and cause of all most wretched things, the fear of death."

"an autotelic person needs little material possessions, comfort, power or fame because so much of what they do is is already rewarding"  They are less dependent on external rewards that keep others going with a life of routine.  They are more autonomous, independent,  they cannot be as easily manipulated by threats or rewards from the external world.  At the same time, they're more involved with the present moment, the current of life"

A life of flow- without desires, without expectations, without hope, without fear..

- left to its own devices, the brain will try to transform any routine into a habit, in order to save cognitive processing

-craving the reward drives the habit loop- focus on cultivating the craving to develop new habits.

-key is to change routine, not cues/cravings/ rewards to change habits

https://sites.bu.edu/ombs/2012/11/12/defending-platos-renunciation-of-art/

It wasn’t so much a problem for Plato that art had such a grip on the cultural norms and moral fibers of a society, but rather that the artists themselves had no understanding of what they were representing, and thus inspired corrupt and destructive morals. In the eyes of Plato, the artist or poet was typically not the ideal moral character in any society, and thus should not have been in charge of dictating moral grounds or developing cultural norms. A second complaint Plato had about the role of the artist was that even if they were generally a moral and civilized human being, they were falsely representing reality through their art, something which Plato very much opposed to and which undermined a central theory in Platonism.

"snobs, whose behaviour lies at the heart of our anxieties about our status. Though certain friends and lovers will promise not to disown us even if we are bankrupted and disgraced (on a good day, we may even believe them), it is on a diet of the highly conditional attentions of snobs that we are generally forced to subsist."

"In the word’s earliest days, a snob was taken to mean someone without high status, but it quickly assumed its modern and almost diametrically opposed meaning: someone offended by a lack of high status in others. It was also clear that those who used the word were doing so pejoratively, to describe a process of discrimination they found regrettable and worthy of mockery

it has grown common to describe as a snob almost anyone who practises overt social or cultural bias, who declares one kind of person or music or wine to be plainly better than another. Snobs comprise – according to this understanding – all those who insist too loudly on a scale of values.
Yet it might be more accurate to limit the meaning of snobbery to a particular way of resolving the question of who and what to respect. The distinctive mark of snobs is not simple discrimination, it is an insistence on a flawless equation between social rank and human worth."

The company of the snobbish has the power to enrage and unnerve because we sense how little of who we are deep down – that is, how little of who we are outside of our status – will be able to govern their behaviour towards us. We may be endowed with the wisdom of Solomon and have the resourcefulness and intelligence of Odysseus, but if we are unable to wield socially recognized badges of our qualities, our existence will remain a matter of raw indifference to them."

"Snobs can through time be found ingratiating themselves with a range of prominent groups – soldiers (Sparta, 400 BC), bishops (Rome, 1500), poets (Weimar, 1815), farmers (China, 1967) – for the primary interest of snobs is power, and as the distribution of power changes, so, naturally and immediately, will the objects of their admiration."

Given their exclusive interest in reputation and achievement, when the outer circumstances of their acquaintances alter, snobs are prone to make some sudden tragicomic reassessments of who their closest friends might be."

"The problem is compounded by newspapers. Because snobs combine a weak capacity for independent judgement with an appetite for the views of influential people, their beliefs will, to a critical degree, be set by the atmosphere of the press."

"Thackeray proposed that the obsessive English concern with high status and aristocracy could be traced back to the country’s papers, which daily enforced messages about the prestige of the titled and the famous and, by implication, the banality of the un-titled and the ordinary.

To try to understand the problem, it is perhaps only ever fear that is to blame. Belittling others is no pastime for those convinced of their own standing. There is terror behind haughtiness. It takes a punishing impression of our own inferiority to leave others feeling that they aren’t good enough for us.

The fear flows down the generations. In a pattern common to all abusive behaviour, snobs generate snobs. An older generation inflicts its own unusually powerful association between modest rank and catastrophe, denying its offspring the layer of emotional bedding that would grant them the inner ease to imagine that low status (their own and that of others) does not neatly equate with unworthiness, nor high status with excellence."

"Before mocking anyone who bought such a piece, it would perhaps be fairer to wonder about the wider context in which this kind of furniture was made and consumed. Rather than teasing the buyers, we may blame the society in which they lived for setting up a situation where the purchase of ornate cabinets felt psychologically necessary and rewarding, where respect was dependent on baroque displays. Rather than a tale of greed, the history of luxury could more accurately be read as a record of emotional trauma. It is the legacy of those who have felt pressured by the disdain of others to add an extraordinary amount to their bare selves in order to signal that they too may lay a claim to love.

Crushes: they happen to some people often and to almost everyone sometimes. Airports, trains, streets, conferences – the dynamics of modern life are forever throwing us into fleeting contact with strangers, from among whom we pick out a few examples who seem to us not merely interesting, but, more powerfully, the solution to our lives. This phenomenon – the crush – goes to the heart of the modern understanding of love. It could seem like a small incident, essentially comic and occasionally farcical. It may look like a minor planet in the constellation of love, but it is in fact the underlying secret central sun around which our notions of the Romantic revolve.
A crush represents in pure and perfect form the dynamics of the Romantic philosophy: the explosive interaction of limited knowledge, outward obstacles to further discovery – and boundless hope.
The crush reveals how willing we are to allow details to suggest a whole. We allow the arch of someone’s eyebrow to suggest a personality. We take the way a person puts more weight on their right leg as they stand listening to a colleague as an indication of a witty independence of mind. Or their way of lowering their head seems proof of a complex shynessand sensitivity. From only a few cues, you anticipate years of happiness, buoyed by profound mutual sympathy. They will fully grasp that you love your mother even though you don’t get on well with her; that you are hard-working, even though you appear to be distracted; that you are hurt rather than angry. The parts of your character that confuse and puzzle others will at last find a soothing, wise, complex soulmate.
In elaborating a whole personality from a few small – but hugely evocative – details, we are doing for the inner character of a person what our eyes naturally do with the sketch of a face

We don’t particularly notice it day-to-day, but the stories our culture presents us with concerning love and relationships – via films, songs, novels and adverts – have a major subterranean influence on how we think and feel. They shape our sense of what is normal and hence of what is troublingly abnormal; they seed certain hopes and expectations and foster particular opportunities for disappointment, indignation or alarm
