I've never heard of this 'little Jesus' tradition before, it's interesting

Ok, so as I've mentioned via PM, the commercials... according to them, what's the difference between Slovakia and Poland? even Czechs got something different for them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0IakE89KFg

I was looking for the song from this commercial, that's how I came across the Slovakian video... and the Czech one, I didn't know we have more or less the same commercials in our countries btw I had to double-check if it's Slovakian, because 'Slovenska' sounds more like Slovenia, so...

Yeah, poor Santa... here it has always been "the little jesus" - "ježiško" that was believed to bring presents... can you imagine how perplexed must these children be now, with all the Santa-brought-from-abroad all around? When Russians were here, they had their Ded Maroz (Dedo Mráz), and now this Santa madness I want to maintain our Slovak traditions of Jezisko - but I seriously fear for it´s future.
^Alas, that's globalisation! Have you ever heard the Icelandic Christmas traditions? I think this concept is brilliant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yule_Lads#List_of_Yule_Lads <but it too is being encroached upon by the more 'standard' Western interpretations...

Have you ever heard of a show called Sailor Moon and were you ever a fan ?

Of course I know it Sailor Moon was a big boom once here... but I never got the heck of it, dunno why I remember that when I was little, the only time spent before TV was to see the bedtime story and then it was bed time. And on Saturdays and Sundays morning, before my parents woke up, I watched tv series like Ducktales or Gummy Bears or Slovak tales... but then it was time to go out. And more than TV I loved reading books. so Sailormoon never got me

but Johnny Bravo did

I guess since you weren't a fan I won't offend by saying I never got the point of it . I also thought the theme song was awful, but its hard to get out of my head after hearing it .

Random pic taken by me...

Dunno if you´ve read Terry´s Pratchetts´ Hogfather, but he writes that every holiday, festival has its origins in bloody manners of our ancestors... I think it´s true, every habit has its origins... and mostly very bloody one. Christmass, Easter day.... you know what I mean.

I shamelessly love this song. It puts me in such a happy mood. Well, the commercials make me wish summer would come soon and I'd get dressed in a pretty dress and go to some pretty places like in these commercials and enjoy the food lol, I mean, you can do it at home but it doesn't feel quite the same.

I didn't know the commercial is in other countries I thought it's only for our market, the woman in these commercials is a Polish dancer, who occasionally acts and models.

I have never heard of those 2 things :| then again, I'm not a specialist in regional cuisine And what about oscypek? what's the name for it in Slovak? I remember there was a 'conflict' between our countries, cause we wanted o register it in the EU as our specialty but Slovaks didn't want to agree, to acknowledge it's Poland's specialty? Anyway, I'm pretty sure Slovak and Polish 'oscypek' differ, as for how much milk is used in the production and from which kind of animal... ok, I'll stop now, I'd have to google this for more details

Speaking of won't offend, I forgot to say that I wasn't totally honest about something . That time when you were talking about the gypsey problem over there, I kindof laughed and was about to say something like, "then call the pirates to take care of them" but I couldn't tell if it was a sore subject so I didn't . At least with our romantacized concept of them, I assumed they were such a long ago kindof thing .

I dunno... once I´ve eaten something like squid (dunno though) and it tasted fine but... nothing special. Almost like chicken I´m more traditional when it comes to food, I really don´t "dream" about eating sharks and dolphins and squids or crows or peacocks like some people (some of them consider it their life-goal). I can cook, and I can cook pretty good, so I really like what I cook, lol. Mostly chicken, pork or beef, or many vegetable meals as well. Ocasionally fish.

Oh, I DO love pizza

But I really love Slovak cuisine, it´s very rich and very tasty and most of the meals healthy as well (depends of course on the cook). And I rarely eat in restaurants

I am surrounded by so many restaurants and markets on a daily basis so the cost-benefit calculus and my personal habits (keeping my weight down) never really gives me an urge to cook. What are you best at making?

Calamari or dried squid is okay to me- okay as in I'll eat some if I get the chance, but I'd never order it in a restaurant. I prefer other seafoods. I don't really think that it tastes like chicken though- squid tastes like 'gummy' fish to me. It's as bouncy to chew as gummy bears but there is a fish taste to it. I prefer fried squid over sauteed squid.

What types of American food are available in Slovakia? McDonalds? Pizza Hut? Kentucky Fried Chicken?

I guess you guys don't like eating octopus? I prefer squid, myself.. :-)
^Oh no - I'm happy to eat them (pulpo al a parilla - with a little chorizo, mmm!). I just don't want one wrapping itself around my leg... I'd prefer squid too though, if there's a choice.

I'm also with you on the wasp front, Jennka. WASPS ARE EVIL!

I can't stand eating octopus. It's usually finely shredded, but, as aways..I sample a little and then turn my attention elsewhere..:-D

We call it "oštiepok" and yeah, I remember it well and I too think they differ a little bit. I always thought you, just like us, make bryndza and žinčica and such things. Wikipedia says, that bryndza is made in Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Bulgaria it´s made from sheeps´ milk.

Oh, the romantized image (of gypsies) is really long gone. Most of them even lost or forgot their traditions... which is sad. But I guess pirates, why not... we only need to bring in some sea and I guess the romantized image of pirates was never really quite true (as all the romantized images usually go )

McDonalds of course, Pizza Hut too... KFC yes... erm, dunno what else. What is typical American food, by the way?

I´m best at everything! Lol, joking I can cook a really good bryndzove halusky (one of national Slovak food) and last time I made oskvarkove pagace -

http://www.google.sk/search?q=o%C5%A1karko...280&bih=857

they were cool too it was my first time, so it might have been beginners luck. There is so much food I love to cook - granadir (pasta + potatoes + bacon + vegetables), French potatoes, schnitzels with rice, fried field agaric, goulash (meat, mostly beef, onion, potatoes + additions you like), meat in any style - baked, cooked, fried... mostly with rice or boiled/cooked potatoes (either chopped or crushed up, we call it zemiakova kasa) or with pasta too, sometimes. Or kelovy privarok (kel is a kind of cabbage) - and privarok is kind of gruel or mush? I love food made of gourd in any style (privarok from it, or fried, or cooked or baked ) and soups too... have you ever eaten a soup made from chicken and vegetables? We call it "a balm for body and soul", especially after hard night in Slovak it´s called "slepačia polievka"

I´m sure I´ve forgotten many... and I did not mention many traditional food that I simply don´t cook, or when I do only occasionally. And my mum makes the best spaghetti I´ve ever eaten

No, unfortunately not. I didn't even know there was a book of it, I mean, there has to be a book of course, I just hadn't thought about it! Need to check and get a copy!
