^Well cooking in corn husks is very much a native american thing - our "indian" cuisine is the same, it's a North and South America continental commonality. As such you see it a lot in Mexican cooking which is maybe where you're getting this Spanish vibe from? I can attest though that it's not an actual Spanish thing at all.

Maybe it´s the Mexican cooking that gave me the Spanish vibe - but I´m almost sure I remember something like this from my Spanish lessons when we were learning about food. Damn.

The other thing is, they never showed anything like this in American movies I´ve seen it looks very refreshing and tasty!

^Ummm, the "Christ" bit...

I know that you were referring to the "Christ" bit, but still... ok, I know people are morons, just that... WHY the hell would anyone be offended by that?

Or maybe it´s just that Christmas is "Vianoce" in our language, and it does not contain the "christ" in any way or meaning, so I have not met anyone who would feel offended by it. Hm.

^What else would you possibly want to do with an apple?! (I kid, of course, there's always strudel.) But yes, alcoholic cider from apples. Last year I was in Normandy, France where they are very big on it - and Calvados too which is an apple brandy. I stocked up!

As for my 'Winterval'( :yuckky: ) I'm actually quite a traditionalist/sentimentalist - I like the tree and all that. It's very much MAXIMALISM wherever I may be, it looks like Baby Jesus and Papá Noel have thrown up in there!

Actually I did an apple strudel last week

I know calvados! At least the thing we call "calvados" here is made from apples via destilation and it´s kinda "hard" alcohol - relatively around 52%. Is it the same? Because brandy is something different, at least here.

Hell how I love calvados

And where do you usually spend it? With your family? I never thought you to be a traditionalist but to be frank, I like the tree and I love the atmosphere - I just need to get out of the town everytime.... there is nothing more beautiful for me than a Christmas day - the 24th of December - spent in woods. You sit outside on the terrace on a bench and watch the snow falling down, and everything is so quiet. So peacefull. It screams "Christmas" for me And then there are people I feel good with, it´s always so much fun. So... warm.

That looks very, very tasty indeed, Dave! But it reminds more of a Spanish food than American, why is that?

Oh, as Baron mentioned, cooking in corn husks (tamales) is very prevalent here is the USA due to our neighbor to the south and the huge influx of Mexican immigrants into the states - not to mention the fact that many areas of the southwest once belonged to Mexico itself So with all that said, it's why we ourselves here have tamales during Christmas. There are countless mom-and-pop shops selling the masa (corn dough) to make them yourself or the finished dish for the "culinary challenged" . You can still dine on tamales thru out the year but Christmas is one HEAVY day for that delicious dish At least that's how it is here in Southern California

Any more snow by the way?

Lol now that you mention it, it´s been snowing here since last week, and it´s getting pretty big. Here in Bratislava we have a mild temperature, around 0 to -6, but at weekend we were at the cottage and the temperatures dropped down to -13. Freezy! But the snow it´s almost everywhere, and it looks beautiful

How about you?

Any snow over there yet ? Still pretty warm on this side . We still have lots of birds as well unless this is where they come anyway.

Hey Joe where have you been?

We started to feed the birds plenty of tomtits, some redcaps and I even saw two jaybirds - they were SO beautiful! And of course, cats they always come at winter and spend more time with us.

So yes, it´s been snowing for more than a week now, it looks very Christmas-y

All things I appreciate,

When you don't give up your rights and fight for them while some others easily and for little reasons give them up.

When you don't lie for any little reason and others lie all the time.

When you don't fear anything to say or do as long as it is correct while others are so cowards to even face you with wrong things they did.

When you always search for right ways to get money even in trading or any oher complicated work while some others openly and proudly work in drugs /guns trading.

Many other things, but these are the so special.

You do follow all these rules?

These are not rules to follow, they're good principals planted on us from when we were young,so yes I'm taking sides with all these good habits. I always try to stick to them,it's not meaning I'm a priest or a nun or a holy person, but this is what builds a real person .

I know many people that don´t like cats. When I ask them why, they usually just don´t know. Then they say "they´re so false and you know, just not sincere". Dogs are generally more loved I love both, though I prefer cats a little bit more. Dogs are very readable, you know one, you know them all. They forget maltreatment by humans so fast. They are so... loveable. So pure. That´s why I´ve never seen anything sadder than a dog who was being treated bad by humans, yet he can recover in a year when you give him enough love. We will never earn, nor deserve such love they are able to give. They will always forgive.

On the other hand, it takes years to get know a cat. There is something wild in their hearts that amazes me. They come when they want. They obey the rules, but it´s more like an agreement between both of us. This for that. They pretend you don´t exist in one moment, in the other they bring dead mice to your doorstep, or newborn kittens just to show up or express gratitude. Some of them look at me and I have this feeling that they actually think about you.

They fascinate me

I don't know about forgiving. I heard about my parents' friends' dogs... for example, one of them was taken from some family (I mean, they gave him up) and the dog was very aggressive towards little kids. Turned out the kids from that family would be very bad for that dog, like rolling him down from the hill :| I don't think this doggy was ever safe around children.

I prefer dogs... with cats, it's like they show you their love only when they need to. You know, the kind of behaviour many humans show cats are animal equivalent of people who were never interested in taking care of their grandma but once she's dead they are trying to show they were always there for her-when in fact all they care about is to get her apartment

I think it depends on your experience with this illness rather than being conservative. My godparents had granny with Alzheimer - it was more than bad. She did not remember anything. She was no longer herself, she didn´t know her kids, her grandchildren, no one. She was like a small child, hiding her poo in closet and not remembering it afterall. She didn´t know her name. Like there was not ANY soul left... it was just a body doing its thing. I think this is the kind of state Terry fears so much. What is the purpose of keeping alive someone only via medicine, while the quality of his life is less than zero? What is the purpose of living when you don´t realize yourself? When you can´t enjoy anything anymore? He wants to die with dignity. I don´t consider it to be a sin... people should be allowed to die under some circumstances if they want to. I know this is hard thing to discuss, and a sad one at that.

Because there's always hope? I think so. Or you may not be rational when it comes to your family... Deciding there's no purpose in keeping somebody alive may be more difficult that taking care of a severly ill person, I guess. It really depends on your circumstances and beliefs.

btw, I just remembered this story about a man who was in coma for 20 years(!) and his wife was still with him all that time... he woke up and lived for 6 months, and then died. I know this is not the same as the case we've just discussed but I felt like sharing :')

Keep posting, I love those!! And agree on the teacher ones, god those are like universal truths! It´s really the same all over the world??

and the Gotye

I guess so especially with these 'both B and C are correct but B is more correct' and saying you have 40 minutes to write the test, yet the lesson (at least here) is 45-minutes long, the teacher is late and it takes time to distribute everything and 'no writing during break' and so on

As to where I've been, I haven't really been anywhere as I've always had my miscelaneous one hit wonder posts in various threads outside of personal threads and Site and Forum that seem to be invisible to everyone else but me . I'm not really sure why I do it. Maybe its to make the admins appear visible? I can't say. I do love cats in the snow too . Did you see the picture of mine I posted? That's a nice array of birds you all have too. Do you ever eat snow ? Of course, you can make ice cream with it, but I like the taste of the freshly fallen variety too .

I know what you mean - I knew many dogs that were just like that. My fl´s dog was treated bad by kids when she was little, and since that she never liked kids. However, eventhough I was little and they encouraged me to leave her alone, I always found the time to stroke her gently or pat her and talk to her - and she never did me anything, when she realized there is nothing to be feared of in my presence, she was just as kind to me.

There are many cases around dogs from shelters about dogs that were maltreated and in very bad state when they arrived - yet, after a year of kind treatment and lots, lots of patience, they are able to recover and be placed in another family. Of course they will never forget - but they will forgive and give the humans another chance. Love can do miracles to them. This is so special about dogs. They are extremelly loyal to people.

I prefer dogs... with cats, it's like they show you their love only when they need to. You know, the kind of behaviour many humans show cats are animal equivalent of people who were never interested in taking care of their grandma but once she's dead they are trying to show they were always there for her-when in fact all they care about is to get her apartment

that´s a very acurate comparison! They indeed act like this however, since we started to visit the cottage like 3 years ago or so, I have met so many cats - they were all different. Some you could see like twice a year - and some always came to us to greet us when we arrived and stayed with us for the whole weekend or more if we stayed there. Anything we were doing - they were there, watching us, when we sat down in the evening and opened a beer, they came to cuddle, they brought mice and when had kittens, always came to show them to us it was really lovely. Now we have these two sisters and they are so different - one of them, Bombos, she´s like this independent lady who owns the whole world and only gets on well with her sister, while she, the sister, Marcel, gets along with every cat around and takes care of abandoned kittens she´s the kindest cat I have ever seen, damn Then we have the Whitey (the oldest of them and biggest) who is the boss and who is very shy around people, she only rarely comes to cuddle or lets you to stroke her. But she´s a brilliant predator and a good mice-catcher, so we´re happy to have her around.

Lol, sorry Lay to bother you with my silly cat stories - but for me, they are indeed precious animals that fascinate me. But well... 99% of all animals fascinate me

Because there's always hope? I think so. Or you may not be rational when it comes to your family... Deciding there's no purpose in keeping somebody alive may be more difficult that taking care of a severly ill person, I guess. It really depends on your circumstances and beliefs.

I know, the hope dies last. And I know it´s difficult to decide who should die and who should live - I´m more talking about that if the person decides to die under some circumstances with dignity (I mean not the relatives that decide, but the person itself) that she/he should be allowed to do that - and not kept alive only via medicine just for the sake of it. Terry is an adult, sensible man whose mind is clear for now and he decided about his "fate" and "end". And I absolutely understand his decision.

btw, I just remembered this story about a man who was in coma for 20 years(!) and his wife was still with him all that time... he woke up and lived for 6 months, and then died. I know this is not the same as the case we've just discussed but I felt like sharing :')

Thank you for sharing never heard about this story. When we were dicussing this with fl, he told me that if such thing was ever to happen to him, he wants to be cutted off the gadgets and let be died peacefully. I have the same opinion if anything like that should happen to me... and if our body organs - or at least some of them - would be ok, we would like them to be used for other people. If my death can save someone´s life, I´m all for it.

I guess so especially with these 'both B and C are correct but B is more correct' and saying you have 40 minutes to write the test, yet the lesson (at least here) is 45-minutes long, the teacher is late and it takes time to distribute everything and 'no writing during break' and so on

I guess it really is universal. I have experienced so many such teachers! And my friend told me recently that one of his university teachers is not even willing to note down the mark to his index - and he needs it to end the year. And the teacher is nowhere to find so silly!

GOOD LORD...that's colder then a polar bears ass! I'm much too big a pussy to handle that kind of cold, I love it, but my body is so acclimated to Cali cold, one day over there and I'd be crying for my blanket But what a postcard picture scene I bet

As for us here, we are on the complete opposite side of the weather spectrum. Today we had a temp of 72 F ( 23 C) and its been that way for about a good 4-5 days. But we have a decent size storm coming in tomorrow late afternoon into the early morning hours of Thursday. Relatively cold storm too as snow levels are dropping to the 3,500 - 4000 foot levels (1066 - 1219 meters). You know its a warm winter when you go to dinner in shorts
