...

As I said: Not that I've dwelt on it or anything.

Ah, if only the VSFS wasn't on the silly path that they look ever unlikely to turn back from. How exciting would it be to have a Baron styled reboot.

*sigh*

Oh dear. I don't even know what a Mackem is

My perceptions of Michael just went all over the place for a moment there though

^I don't want to speak for him, but I think he's from Sunderland which is only ten miles away from Newcastle - and to the untrained ear I guess they sound the same? But, as with any near-city neighbours, there's an acute sense of rivalry; particularly as they are the two cities of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear. 'Mackem' is just the slang term for someone from Sunderland ('Wearsider' - as on the river Wear), as opposed to 'Geordie' for a 'Tynesider from Newcastle.

I hope that's OK, Michael*?

Spot on, Baron (as usual). I'm from Sunderland and therefore would be more accurately described as a Mackem, but it's an easy mistake to make for the uninitiated. I'm nowhere near as 'in your face' a north easterner as my namesake from Partridge, though, or the cast of Geordie Shore - doing for Newcastle what Borat did for Kazakhstan.

Without wishing to bore anyone with ancient history, I believe the rivalry between the two cities dates back to the English civil war, when Newcastle supported King George (hence the term 'Geordies') while Sunderland sided with Cromwell's Parliamentarians. These days, although there's a faint sense of injustice over the council's treatment of Wearside as Tyneside's 'poor relations' and a perceived bias towards our neighbours in the national and local media, the rivalry really only manifests itself through football/soccer. Speaking of which, only four days to go until the derby. I'm scared...

^Yeah, she reminds me of Clara Alonso a little

I listened to their first album a fair bit when it came out, although I was never a huge fan. Their track Bruises got a fair bit of airplay here at the time. And I really fell in love with Evident Utensil

I really like their new record, and I appreciate them a whole lot more now too - as I said, their live show really impressed me

Are you a Geordie Michael?

Hope you get to see Anna somewhere soon. It'd be worth making a road trip to see her somewhere else though, if push came to shove. The UK is so small compared to Aus - I'd do the distance north to south easy

Oh, I recognise 'Bruises' now - it was used in a TV ad that was on heavy rotation about a year or so ago (I forget what the ad was for). The second track is new to me, but the vocal delivery reminds me of Regina Spektor, which I use as a compliment. And now you mention it, I do think Caroline bears a slight resemblance to Clara, though I would never have seen it on my own.

I'd consider travelling to see Anna if I could find someone to drag along. By necessity, I've become quite adept at roping people into going to gigs, but it's a bit harder when they take place further afield.

Where is 'Mackem' derived from then? Surely you should be called Crommies

Speaking of Geordies though, do you like Ross Noble at all? I just saw him for the seventh (:|) time on Tuesday night, funnily enough. First time he's been here for a while - he used to tour like crazy, but he's slowed down a lot in the past few years since he had his daughter. I think he's one of those love-him-or-hate-him comics though

I've thought that very same thing actually - particularly the Soviet Kitsch era Spektor. Have you heard her new song yet?

We should, really. But apparently it's something to do with Sunderland's shipbuilding heritage, derived from "make 'em and take' em" - a phrase supposedly coined by Tyneside shipbuilders to insult their Wearside counterparts, who would build ships that were subsequently taken away by upper classes from elsewhere.

I find Ross's stand-up act a little bit hit and miss at times but I'm a big fan of that surreal brand of humour and in general, I quite like him. Doesn't he live in Australia these days? There was a pretty good documentary shown on this side of the pond a while back, about his travels across the country.

I initially overlooked it in the 'Music of 2012' thread, but I've had it on repeat for a good half hour now and it's really starting to sound rather magnificent. Seems more in the vain of 'Apres Moi' and 'Machine' which I thought were both highlights of their respective albums. Can't wait for the new one now.

^ I recently saw a trail for this show - it's not for me...

^If only Ed Razek and co. read your thread... I'd be cheap too, just an access-all-areas pass and a jar of body glitter that I have to use up...

What's an S.I. donbot shoot look like then?

Ah, I see

Yeah, I suppose it's not all gold.. but for the most part I love him. On one of his tours I caught 2 of the shows, just to see how much of it was actually off-the-cuff. I was actually surprised at some of the things that were repeated - things that you'd swear he was just making up on the spot. That said, the bulk of his shows are still mostly fed off the audience, woven around a couple of anecdotes/other random crap he's got prepared. He's genuinely brilliant though

His wife is Australian, and he used to live here - as I understand it he pretty much used to spend half the year here and the other half in the UK, while he toured around. His house here actually burned down a few years ago in a bushfire though (a massive one - he was one of many who lost a lot), and following that he moved back to the UK <_<

What's an S.I. donbot shoot look like then?

No, not really

I suppose my cast would be:

Marloes Horst

Edita Vilkeviciute

Catrinel Menghia

Nina Agdal

Michea Crawford

Jarah Mariano

Simone Villas Boas

Clara Alonso

Pania Rose

Shanina Shaik

Leticia Zuloaga

Jenna Pietersen

Emanuela De Paula

Fabiana Semprebom

Candice Swanepoel

Marloes gets the cover of course, and the ladies in bold get a bodypaint set.

In terms of the look, I haven't really got specific locations/themes in mind, but I'd actually have distinctive aesthetics attached to each one. Say 5 locations with 3 girls in each. Find the essence of the location - the spirit, the colour palette, the textures, and have that carry through. As it is now, they go all over the world, then seem to have a conversation along the lines of "Right, beach shoot in the daytime? Oh wait, we're in China - give her a paper fan too." What I'm really craving from the magazine though is some more interesting and artistic photography, in terms of lighting, framing, angles, contrast, textures, and all the rest of it. I'd love to see the odd black & white photo scattered throughout.

^I've often pondered the point of having several exotic locales if you are not going to make any distinction between them! Most 'beach shots' I've seen involve surf and blue sky - I fail to see why you need to jet to ten different countries if it's just sun, sea and sand that you're after. I like the Pirelli trick of having photographers with an identifiable style 'taking charge' of the annual calendar. To me, S.I. is anonymous in that respect. Often this goes for the models too, I like a personality to shine through.

I'm all for you doing it though! That Edita 'sample' in particular is wonderful - do you have the full campaign (I presume it's a Calvin Klein ad campaign?) to hand?

Yes indeed. It's from a few years ago, but Defender just recently reposted glorious HQs in her thread:

^Annoying that, isn't it? I like her too.

You could always ask modelknowledge as she seems very keen on telling everyone how great she is at finding out such things - whilst simultaneously putting across how you are lazy for not bothering yourself and also not quite as clever as her...
