Coulthard: Schumi still a hit

Berlin - A year after his last Formula One race, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher could fill the vacancy at McClaren and dominate the track again, British driver David Coulthard told the German press on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Scot watched in awe on Tuesday as Schumacher - who retired at the end of the 2006 season - showed no signs of his year away as he test drove for his old team Ferrari to put their car through its paces.

He recorded the fastest time of 1:21.922 over the 64 laps test-driving in Spain.

Red Bull driver Coulthard said Schumacher, 38, who last raced at the Brazilian Grand Prix in October 2006, could return to dominate Formula One again, if he wanted to step out of retirement.

Especially if he chose to fill the gap at McClaren recently vacated by twice world champ Fernando Alonso as the British-based team look for a driver to partner Lewis Hamilton.

"No-one should doubt Michael's quality for a moment, he hasn't lost anything," Coulthard told German tabloid Bild.

"He could make a return to Formula One anytime he wants.

"If McLaren needs another driver - Michael would be a fantastic solution."

Schumacher blazed around the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain and fellow Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer watched in wonder.

"It is unbelievable what Michael can still do," said Badoer.

"It barely looks like he has spent a day away from the track, let alone a year.

"He is definitely the fastest driver of the world."

But Schumacher has ruled out a return to full-time racing on numerous occasions, insisting he prefers time with his family rather than the persistent pressure of the track.

"I hope that I can support Ferrari during the preparations for the new season," he said.

But Coulthard put the admiring glances of fans into words when he added: "Paul McCartney never forgot how to make good music and Michael has never forgotten how to drive fast cars."

Schumacher would be a hit at McClaren, says Coulthard

BERLIN (AFP) - A year after his last Formula One race, seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher could fill the vacancy at McClaren and dominate the track again, British driver David Coulthard told the German press on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old Scot watched in awe on Tuesday and Wednesday as Schumacher - who retired at the end of the 2006 season - showed no signs of his year away as he test drove for his old team Ferrari to put their car through its paces.

He recorded the fastest times on both of the two-day test drive in Spain and later admitted he was a bit nervous before he climbed behind the wheel.

"Before I got in the car, I was a bit nervous," Schumacher told German sports agency SID. "And I was curious to see how rusty I would be."

But Schumacher has ruled out a return to full-time racing on numerous occasions, insisting he prefers time with his family rather than the persistent pressure of the track.

"I hope that I can support Ferrari during the preparations for the new season," he said. "Test driving was great fun and a part of me has missed it. "But a return to Formula One racing is not up for discussion."

But Coulthard put the admiring glances of fans into words when he added: "Paul McCartney never forgot how to make good music and Michael has never forgotten how to drive fast cars."

Coulthard blames Toro Rosso boss for Alonso rumours

David Coulthard has hit out at Scuderia Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost for the recent spate of rumours linking Fernando Alonso with a drive at the Red Bull Racing team, something Coulthard insists is not true.

"One thing that has surprised me from a Red Bull point of view since all the speculation began is that Scuderia Toro Rosso's team principal Franz Tost told the press that there were talks going on between Red Bull and Alonso," Coulthard wrote in his column for ITV.

"I cannot understand why he would feel it's appropriate to make a comment about another team, owned by the same parent company, without any authority to do so and no understanding of the contractual situation," he went on. "STR had the same car as us this year but nowhere near the same performance so shouldn't he be concentrating on his own business rather than ours?"

Coulthard would consider NASCAR

David Coulthard says he would consider NASCAR as an option for his future career once he retires from Formula One.

The Scot, who also hinted at closing on the end of his career in Formula One, told espn.com at the Race of Champions last weekend that he would prefer NASCAR over a single-seater series like the IRL if he was to commit to a move to the US.

"I would consider something like NASCAR," Coulthard said "I don't think I would consider IRL. The only thing is, in America, you have to commit to it absolutely. Which means you move out there, take your family there.

"But I'd certainly consider it. This will be my 15th season in Formula One. After that... I'll do this as long as I'm having fun, as long as they keep saying 'Would you like to continue?'"

Coulthard praised NASCAR saying that even if there has not been a massive interest towards the series in Formula One circles, he believes that it can be a big challenge like it has been for his former rival and friend Jacques Villeneuve.

He added that the migration of open-wheel drivers that kicked off last year with Juan Pablo Montoya has contributed to change the overall perception of NASCAR in Europe and around the world.

"I think it's checking the box of NASCAR," he added. "Generally, people in Formula One haven't really been that aware of NASCAR, and of what we have been aware of we've probably higher respect for NASCAR than what we have for the oval racing IRL.

"That may come as a surprise, but as a single-seater racer in Europe, the perception in Europe is if you're flat on a super speedway, yes there's tactics, but how is that more challenging than driving Monaco?

"That's a simplistic view, I know, and I've not done it. But [Jacques] Villeneuve is a friend of mine who's obviously won over there [in Champ Car], came over to F1 and won in F1. I just know it's a different challenge."

Coulthard, whose Formula One team has a sister operation in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, believes the arrival of more foreign drivers will help the series to continue to expand, even if he thinks that still the more established stock car drivers will prevail over those coming from other series.

"NASCAR is so different, and any of us in a touring car would find how difficult they are relative to a single-seater," Coulthard said. "So all it does is keep checking the boxes [for NASCAR].

"If they keep getting, it doesn't have to be European drivers, but if they keep getting foreign drivers in the championship it's only a matter of time before it becomes more and more [followed] around the world.

"From a NASCAR point of view, from what I can see they're not fumbling with the business model to make money and everyone's doing very well. But it can't hurt any business to expand.

"And yeah, maybe it's frowned upon by some of the good ol' boys. But the Jimmie Johnsons, the consistent talented guys, will still be there and mixing it with these drivers from other formulas - and beating them."
