Hey Jennka,

Eyelid surgery is very common in South Korea and among the Asian American people. From what I know, beauty in Asia does mirror the Western standard slightly- East Asians like to have longer noses, double eyelids, whiter skin, and more moderate cheekbones. Caucasian people are often used in advertisements. (unlike in in the West) There are specialist plastic surgeons that specialize in Asian surgeries.

Outside of Japan and cosmopolitan areas like Shanghai, the desired consensus was not always that way-particularly in ancient history. I think some of the Western influences that eventually settled in beauty consensus came from marketing of Western consumer discretionary and media starting from the reconstitution of global trade after the second world war.

It seems to me that equally skilled caucasian men and women are actually valued at a small premium at client facing service jobs for "exotic/prestige value' in certain parts of Asia. ie. Waiter/Waitress, Airline attendant, certain types of sales, etc.

You know, I have always been sure of one thing - no matter what others say, do or look like, you always have to stand for yourself. That´s why I consider blaming media or fashion for anorexia a bullshit. The same, if someone is so stupid that he/she would be able to starve herself/himself or go the the surgery thing, it´s mainly HIS/HER own fault. We are given freedom, we make decision for ourselves, am I right? Why then trying to find any other villain?

I have always been "a fashion fan" in the way I always have adored this or that model and this or that actress... but I have never even tried to go on diets, not talking about anorexia. My best friend the other way. But it wasn´t because she wanted to be like the girl on the picture - she only wanted to gain some attention in her family, she felt like no one gives a fuck about her. Which was a bullshit, of course. So, if we want to find a villains, we should start from ourselves.

Sorry for this oftopic, ot only came to my mind

I remember one epizode of MASH where this Korean boy wanted to have a surgery because he wanted to look like American soldiers so hard, as "American boys always get the girls". Hawkeye tried to convince him it´s a bullshit, failed. Everyone else tried, failed. Only Margharet was able to do that, because she was a "woman" and he was still a little boy, mind you but nice anyway.

I just think that a happy, contended human has no reason to do such things - and that no media, no print, no film, no advertisement will make him do that. But we always try to find a villain, so we could wash our hands over it and say "I tried everything, it was the media!". I just think it´s much deeper than that. And it´s not only media´s fault. One should know his/her place and stand for it. Asians are gorgeous the way they are.

That´s exactly what I think - you are who you are and should stand for that, amen to that. NO ONE should be able to change it.

new interesting faces? Feel free to show them here, I´m always eager to know. You´re more into actresses, or?

Miss Arielle,

It's not egalitarian or the ideal but it's what's there, - including peculiarities like the "bamboo ceiling" in the West. Don't worry, I won't bite

Well, I think the standards for beauty- which are variable- shifted towards a slightly more Caucasian appearance- partially through external influences. Children see these images over and over again growing up and they imprint in one's mind. I remember seeing what stood for beauty back in Shanghai from the late 1800s to the early 20th century (and Communist Chinese culture, particularly under Mao) and noticed that there seems to be considerable differences. And ancient Art from Asia depict a different ideal, as well. Mao wanted Chinese culture to be purged of Western or Ancient influences so the standard of female beauty became the relatable image of the tan, brave peasant girl.

While good looking people are always outliers, in the West, (outside of High Fashion at least )these people can blend into the crowd. But the standard setting bodies in Asia can look considerably different from the typical Chinese, Korean, or Japanese person. It is not only in East Asia but also in India, where celebrities really depart from ethnic appearances.

You're absolutely right about being secure with oneself.

Miss Arielle,

Regardless of my prior performance here, I tend to much more prefer exchange over argument. My experience is limited to what I have seen during business trips or casual travel. I will gladly defer to expert opinion, especially if you're an Asian woman or experienced person residing in France. I always defer to expert opinion and I hope that you can come to recognize that I possess discipline as to determining the limits and the extents of my knowledge.

The extents being that I had a casual interest in Asia, and know Mandarin well enough to read (poorly) scattered chunks of a newspaper, amuse people in a Chinatown and do stilted & primitive smalltalk with an american accent

Oh, and I believe that most people aren't close to being physically beautiful like models and movie stars. Most however, are usually sufficiently attractive to render their physical appearance irrelevant to a worthy evaluator who considers their thoughts, behaviors, and manners as beautiful. I think even physically 'unattractive' men and women can be beautiful if their essence is appreciated. Their optimal strategy should be as attractive as possible- which naturally involves maximizing their potential as human beings and finding people who appreciate them.

It´s hard to pick five, they were all gorgeous. I try:

1. Pocahontas - she has always been everything I adore about a human being - wild, free at heart, wise, beautiful and full of love to nature. I have loved her ever since I´ve seen the movie. She was even talking to trees, like me

2. Mulan - I loved her courage, her passion and love for her family. She was freakin´cool!

3. Rapunzel - so innocent and full of dreams young and naive, beautiful at heart

4. Belle - she loved to read. When I first saw the movie, I laughed out loud, pointing to her, "that´s me" you could see me with book anywhere - while eating, at school, in bus, tram, loo, everywhere and she was kind at heart, full of love.

5. Ariel - we ALL love her, don´t we?

there are many more, all the disney chara´s are awesome

Oh, communist picture of ideal beauty is always tan, brave peasant girl this is "communist international" we had it here too. Together with pictures of an "ideal communist" and such bullshits.

I think people love "exotic look" in the whole world all the same. Just as in asian or arabic countries people consider "exotic" caucasian appearance, e.g. here in Slovakia we consider exotic Asian or African or Indian look (and you should see the huge rant about it as to sexual attraction.) It´s something "special", "exotic", more beautiful than the average looking Slovak woman. So men here really go for it. Eventhough we have many, many Asian people here (they are mostly businessmen, and I love their stores).

I guess this does not count to big international cities such as London, Paris, Madrid, Washington D.C., New York... but generally speaking, people love "exotic" looking people that are not average in their country. It´s just something "different", more interesting than most of what you are used to

and as to beautiful people... hard to tell, beauty means something different to everyone. And even models now are... very wide range, if you know what I mean. There are skinny models, curvy models, white, black, orange, brown, blue, yellow, green... tiny and heavy and all kinds of women. If you ask today "what does a woman have to look like to be a model?" there isn´t a proper and right answer. So I guess anyone can be a model nowadays.

Oh, and I believe that most people aren't close to being physically beautiful like models and movie stars.

I disagree here, because what I see here are people even more beautiful than models or stars, just with less money and makeup and in cheaper clothes. AND also - the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it´s hard to say something like this. For example I consider Angelina Jolie one of the most beautiful woman in the hollywood world, but my fruitlover finds her ugly (I was like, seriously, UGLY? Are you OK? But he just does not like her or find her attractive at all. He loves Sandra Bullock ). And so on and on.

I think even physically 'unattractive' men and women can be beautiful if their essence is appreciated.

I call it "charisma". For me, there aren´t really ugly people. Just people with ugly souls. More later if you want

Right ? And that face, I love it. I think she stands out from the other models.

Hmm I guess we can say that. But I'm far from being a "scouter", just go on net and discover beautiful women on the way

I disagree here, because what I see here are people even more beautiful than models or stars, just with less money and makeup and in cheaper clothes.

Well dont be offended Jennka but I've seen your face and I think you're more beautiful than most of the models here

I think in both the showbiz and real life there are the same bunch of more beautiful/and more average ones.

For example I consider Angelina Jolie one of the most beautiful woman in the hollywood world, but my fruitlover finds her ugly (I was like, seriously, UGLY? Are you OK? But he just does not like her or find her attractive at all.

I have the EXACT same reaction. Everytime I hear 'Angelina Jolie is ugly' I just want to punch people in the face! Because I find AJ very very beautiful and though I can understand some people may not see it ugggh it is just getting on my nerves

I hate also:

'Susan Coffey is a photoshopped beauty' (ugggh no comment)

'Sophie Marceau is average.' (come on..if she's average what about the others?)

'Gisele bundchen is ugly' (are they blind?)

'Carla Bruni is ugly but she has attitude'

Cult Icon => No worries about that.
