Top 10 Most Ridiculout SyFy Channel Movie Titles

I'm not really a faithful or scheduiled tv viewer, but I love the SyFy Channel and like a lot of their shows and movies. I only hope that they continue to stay on the air. That said, they have some sound crazy just by the title, which is fitting looking at how they've chosen to change the spelling of the channel itself .

10. Cube 2: Hypercube

9. Saint Sinner

8. Dead and Deader

7. Anonymous Rex

6. Dinocroc vs. Supergator

5. Mindstorm

4. Alien Express

3. Sharktupus

2. Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave from the Grave

1. Man-Thing

Model Diary: Performance & Objectification

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but after a year of modeling full-time, the mask has started to eat away at the face. What was once a part-time job to support myself through college, has now become a full-time identity, one that I am still trying to navigate. On some days, that is very difficult to do.

I really like my job. Photoshoots are often thrilling and even empowering. I get to travel to places I would otherwise never go, and do things I would otherwise never get to do (like climb naked on an elephant or ride horses on a beach at sunset). And I get paid to do them, which is awesome. All the great things about modeling, though, happen within this dominant structure of an industry that commodifies people, that treats models as beauty objects who don’t really have the right to a voice. Sure, models have ‘tons of personality,’ but it’s a prescribed, performed identity, the parameters of which are determined by art directors, agents, and photographers. The ideal model is happy, eager-to-please, comfortable with her body, energetic, and up for anything. She is never hungry, or tired, or on her period; she is never shy or uncomfortable–on or off camera.

There is enormous pressure to keep up this unrealistic appearance while modeling, and the combination of the two can be corrosive, because it forces models not only to tolerate, but to participate in, their own objectification. The question I keep coming back to is, in a job in which everyone treats me like an object, how can I not begin treating myself as one?

I understand, of course, that being an object is essential to the job. Models are visual tools that are used to sell products. From the moment a model gets scouted, or meets with agencies (and has her measurements taken), she is being sized up as a commodity. This isn’t a criticism; it’s simply the basic reality of the job, and I don’t really have a problem with it (the absurdity of measurements is another story). But, every so often, this fundamental part of modeling becomes skewed, or is pushed just a little bit out of my (increasingly permissive) comfort zone, and yet, I feel like I have no choice but to comply.

The most overt example of this super-objectification is shooting in public. Without the privacy of a closed set, I am forced to tolerate extremely uncomfortable situations in silence, or, depending on the atmosphere of the shoot, with a smile. Recently, for instance, I shot a bikini catalogue in Miami, and was told to pose on public streets in skimpy bikinis, while strangers stood around, cat-calling and making demeaning comments and taking photos with their iPhones. And I said nothing. I have a handful of excuses: We were on a tight schedule, I didn’t want to upset the designer, and I didn’t want to feel upset, either. But ultimately, I said nothing because it seemed like the easiest and most professional response, the one that fit the role of ideal model.

I also thought that I could just ignore the extremely uncomfortable situation, the way that women ignore catcalls on the street, but in a public photoshoot, the catcalling is not just a passing moment, but a sustained assault. The model stands silently in place, as if on display. The aggressors circle around, just far enough to stay out of the photographer’s lens, but close enough to say what they want, and make their comments heard, without consequence. Out of all my experiences in modeling, this is the absolute worst. It’s like the perverted version of being taunted in grade school, except that I’m not even allowed to defend myself. I feel humiliated and threatened at the same time. (Not to mention that I was practically naked on those Miami streets. Talk about feeling vulnerable). Despite my best efforts at remaining ‘professional’, it is impossible to ignore the verbal abuse, and I well up with silent anger and disgust, all the while trying to keep my composure because the camera is still flashing and I’m still supposed to be working. And, for some reason, no one on any production team has ever spoken up on my behalf. The na

What is a Junker?

Lot of glamour models, yes, but not all, apparently... still, I can´t say, for I´ve never really been much interested in this kind of area

Junker is landed nobility, the 'vons' that dominated German society during Freud's time.

An interesting read by I model I greatly respect. Here's a link to her thread.

Your thoughts?

Interesting and balanced but not unexpected. I would have liked to hear more about her performance than her sense of self-esteem. Given the neuroplasticity of the brain...well, there are a lot of jobs that are far more personally and psychologically invasive than modelling. Being a model is much better than next-best-option for people of her age and skill level.

I meant, I would expect her to go for an all natural type look in regular life. I haven't seen her with clothes in candids though, so there wasn't much to base that idea on of course.

Also, you'd be surprised how many fashion models have implants. Theirs are usually either more well done or upgraded from A to B, but the indicator in American, Brazilian and European jobs seems to be hardness (that's not relative to the tone of the rest of their body) rather than size. Size just gets more publicity. A lot of the Japanese ones I wouldn't be able to tell though. Of course, keeping yourself forty pounds under your natural weight is no more natural than implants in a way, but all models seem to make sacrifices to do what they think will make them fit the bill for their trade I guess. Glamour modeling is leading the way in photoshop too for sure, even though its becoming more prevalent in all photoshoots every year.

All that said, my least favorite boobs on the face of the earth are the current Playboy models as they are so thoroughly rock hard. I've never felt any like that, but its hard to imagine it being different from a manican in the store . Of course I'm not fond of the grown women with twelve year old giggling, fake bleach blonde hair and layers on layers of makeup either.

One of my favorite models, Flavia de Oliveira has implants! How much do these models weigh? I'm guessing just 110 @ 5' 10'' or so. I think people have a weight that they gravitate to, but it's probably much lower than they think. I've been 195-145. I am currently 5' 10'', wide athletic frame @ 145 pounds and I have a lot of difficulty going any lower. That's the tipping point for me.

I was thinking what to say and not sound like a dumb-headed idiot that doesn´t respect models work... and I agree with you. Every job has its pros and cons, and there are a lot of jobs much harder and much tougher than modeling - both psychically and physically. And one should only do what one is capable off. Not everyone is able to be a model, and not everyone is capable to be a professional soldier, and not everyone is able to be a doctor... and so on and on.

But it was a really good article, greatly written and good to read. She seems very thoughtfull, though young, and intellingent, which is great.

Your thoughts?

To be honest, at first glance when I saw the font, my first thought was 'was this written by an ant?' . I read it after that and it was definitely interresting. I've always openly despised the kinds of people that call out to women in those situations as well as the practice of doing the shoots in a way to give them the opportunity. All of her points are true and valid in general. It kindof points back to the fact that everything that's wrong with the industry starts at the top. I hope being able to express herself in such away gives her back what she feels she's given up and that people in the industry read it and look at themselves too in the process. There are some underrated qualities of modeling I think. On one hand, some are able to convey emotions in a shoot which doesn't just come with looking a certain way and on another hand, some maintained good grades in school even while having a modeling career. Many overlook those things it seems.

I never thought about the second one, even though I had no desire to see it . I think that first one was on my to do list, but I didn't get around to it. I guess it is a pretty strange title for a 'regular' movie though .

People definitely have a weight they gravitate to generally. As to glamour models, it depends on the genre (I can't keep up with them all). They probably range from right under plus size to commercial fashion size. In general though, I'm not great at gaging women's weight for some reason even though in sports, I can pretty much automatically tell what a guy's weight is. I like a wide range of sizes, only with a small size, I just like it to be the woman's natural size.

How's it going with the Merlins and Whos, Joe?

I got a little behind on my TV shows when I undertook my 'catch up to the average person in movies' campaign plus downloading issues. Of course, I purposefully put Merlin on the shelf to preserve the last season for fear that was going to be it, but now that I know that's not the case, I can start it back up . Now that I've got this 'Security Guard 2012' virus off of my computer, I should be able to catch back up with things .

From what I understand, the creators have struck a deal to make a fifth series (which I'm assuming will be the last one) so you'll be just fine to dive back into Merlin. The fourth series started a couple of weeks back in the UK, but it's being shown in a slightly later timeslot these days. Much of the recent subject matter has been (like Darth Vader) a bit on the dark side.

So what movies are currently on your agenda?

Oh, well, that sounds like more than enough then since most shows I've watched probably didn't get that many .

Movies on my to watch list...hmmm...kindof ashamed of some .

Jurassic Park

Serious Man

Interview With the Vampire

Wicker Man (original)

Jaws

Black Swann

Fight Club

Assorted respected pre-90s movies...

American Beauty

Jerry Mcguire

Die Hards

Mission Impossible

Fatal Attraction

The Exorcist

Fargo

Moby Dick

The Last Samurai

Such an irony that I was about to post my favorite movies of the century list, I guess this might taint it .

I haven't seen enough to make a decent list. I'm closer to an 'authority' on the 00s .

Off the top of my head, I could stall with my favorite bad performances .

Favorite Bad Performances (Excluding Comedies and Horror)

10. Shaq (Kazaam) - Shaq's my favorite basketball player and general athlete of all time. In his prime, his combination of size (7'1 and likely well over 400 pounds) and athleticism (speed, agility and leaping ability for that size) was and is one of a kind in sports history. He's also one of the greatest personalities the sport has ever produced and is probably the first seven foot celebrity in general to really embody being 'comfortable in his own skin'. Along with that he was skilled in the low post and one of the best ball handling and passing centers of all time. As a result of all of this, he was also offered some acting roles which he performed even worse than his rapping. The performance in Steel is just as bad and funny, but I wouldn't call it a favorite because that movie really set Steel back the same way Aflack set Daredevil back.

9. Megan Fox (Transformers) - I must admit, at the height of her popularity, how bad her acting was relative to others was somewhat exhagerrated likely due to a combination of frustration at the overexposure or distaste for her personality (or what was seen and interpreted of it). She's actually more talented than everyone on my "worst male actor's" list just by default of being able to at least express sadness deently enough. That said, what makes her acting bad (besides the fact that she's incapable of being anything but Megan Fox) is the awkward nature of her line delivery. She sounds like Megan Fox reading her lines rather than an actual character. Combine this with some cheesy lines, an awkward unbelievable romance and this one was magic.

8. Brad Pitt (Troy) - Though he does have at least some ability to convey emotion, the way he delivers his lines can at times destroy all credibility. In any case, it didn't ruin the movie and was pretty funny anyway. I could have put Bloom on here, but he didn't talk as much.

7. Collin Ferel (Alexander) - When deciding which one to include, it was hard to decide which was funnier out of Angelina's weird accent and Colin just using his own, but the bad wig tipped the scales in his favor by a lot.

6. Hayden Christiensen (Star Wars Prequels) - hehehe

5. Ben Afleck (Smokin' Aces) - here, Ben plays a bailbondsman with a mustache and Italian(?), Jersey(?) accent and is as believable as Jason Stathom playing Peter Pan. That said, the fact that he wasn't the focus made it not take away from much and served as comic relief. He fails so miserably, its hard to know whether to feel almost sorry for him or just laugh. He got paid for it, so I'm fine just laughing.

4. Eva Mendes (Ghost Rider) - another superhero that was set back by the movie he was given enters the list. In this one, Mendes is a reporter and the early scene where she's actually interviewing is not only maybe the funniest attempt at reporting ever, but a good candidate for worst acting ever in general. She looked nice in that dress though.

3. Taye Digs (The Best Man) - this movie contains maybe the funniest brutal beat down of a best friend of the last twenty years, a couple of the best unused talent in Hollywood in Monica Calhoun and Harold Perrineau. This movie also contains Taye Diggs who is on my worst actors list and whose every single line is unintentional hilarity.

2. Kevin Kosner (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) - I've always loved this movie. It has a great combination of action and memorable lines and the Sheriff here is one of my favorite villains ever. As to Kosner, I'm not sure what stands out more of the fact that he's the only one with an American accent and doesn't even try or that everyone else acts way better. He also seems to have some type of charm and confidence that seems to override his bad acting.

1. Keaneu Reeves (Bram Stoker's Drakula) - minus possibly the worst war scene this side of Legends of the Fall, Bram Stoker's Drakula is like art in motion and there are a lot of things I like about it. One of those things wasn't intended though and that's Keaneu's hilariously weird performance. Even aside from the bad accent and abruptly abandoning said bad accent after a few minutes, he leaves me somewhere between wth? and just laughing out loud.

Joe, am I misreading something or you just qualified "American Beauty" to pre-90's movies? Anyway, why are you ashamed of "Fatal Attraction" on this list? I've finally seen it about 2 months ago and I don't know why I didn't do that before. Glenn Close was fantastic (Y) also, when I watched it on tv it wasn't too late, but around the time when I would usually sleep from after 1 hour from the beginning of a movie , but it kept me so intrigued I watched the whole without missing any parts, haha. As for "Black Swan", I have it on DVD and I could borrow it to you if I could watched it 2 or 3 times already.

Oh, thank you for explanation talking about Freud... I´m currently reading his Dream Psychlogy. Great reading, but exhausting as well.

Are you learning a lot? I've never read any Freud.

I only have dreams when I'm extremely stressed out or anxious. Otherwise, I probably have no really unhappy issues.

I was thinking what to say and not sound like a dumb-headed idiot that doesn´t respect models work... and I agree with you. I have zero disrespect for male exotic dancers and prostitutes. I have learned to have no sense of disrespect....and I try to have no sense of respect :-p Instead of respect, I insert affection of varying grades. I find it very liberating! :-)

What existed before is now a sense of curiosity!

When I was reading this article....about 1/3rd in I half suspected that she would pull out a piece of hyperbole and a piece of 'woe is me'. Thankfully, she didn't. She's a good, expressive writer, and was probably a liberal arts major in her college...but also seems to be a sensitive person that is still burdened, psychologically, with a sense of teenage entitlement and a load of 'civilization and other accumulated fats'. This is probably why she felt what she felt.
