I first saw Noomi in the Swedish version of ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, and after that I was a fan for life. I hear there’s another ‘Prometheus’ movie currently in the works, which I’ll be most interested to check out when the time comes. The next year or so should be pretty good for Eva fans too, she’s expected to appear in the sequels to ‘300’ and ‘Sin City’.
Yeah, I’m certainly looking forward to seeing P-2..I had a blast with P-1 as was evident on BZ…
I saw it relatively recently and kicked myself afterwards, not only for not checking it out on the big screen, but also for missing out on all the chat about it at BZ. For some reason, I seem to remember the cinematic release as something of a 'blink and you'll miss it' job. The movie kind of lulled me into a false sense of security for the first hour, while the following hour was like hell on toast for all concerned, though I will admit to letting out a little chuckle when Noomi put Michael Fassbender’s head in a bag towards the end. ![]()
Any other movies on your 'to-do' list at the moment?
I’ve been out of touch with film for a while. Do you have any? I should really add some by now..
I've begun to think of the current crop of releases more as 'back burner' movies than genuine 'must see' ones, but there's a few I plan on checking out in the near future. I’d like to take a look at the Wolverine movie, though my expectations are nowhere near as high for it as they were for ‘Man of Steel’, particularly since the last standalone Wolverine effort was so (how can I put this politely?
) iffy. I’m expecting big things from next year’s X-Men movie though. I also recently caught ‘Pacific Rim’, which, within the context of being an out-and-out monster movie, was surprisingly decent. Idris Elba is just great in everything. ![]()

It’s funny, I often find myself going through phases of reading constantly and then hardly at all, and alas, I’m out of the habit currently. I actually went on a bit of a kick last year though and read almost all the books on my to-do list (Murakami, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Herman Hesse). Thus, I don’t really have very many must-reads in mind at the moment. Always on the look-out for recommendations though!
How were these books, what were they, and what did you get out of them?
I speed read or study in my sedentary free time instead of watching TV, listen to music, etc..so I’m usually out of touch with these interests. I usually read two or three books at once.
Circa April, I mentioned the book in Jennka’s thread: “The Innovator’s Prescription”- a 420 page text on healthcare reform and healthcare projectory. I finished reading this and Barbarossa 1941 (combat operational history, David M. Glantz) recently. I also read a bunch of esoteric work-related materials at the same time and they’re not worth mentioning…I've also been very slowly working, page by page, on 'Kharkov 1942'- a blotched offensive that saw the Red Army sent 300,000 men to the grave against the Nazis.
If you check my ‘Books you haven’t read thread’, I mention one book and a special interest that I’ve begun to work through at a glacial pace- Law 20th century and the Stalingrad trilogy. The military stuff is extremely complex and rather slow to get through. Also, thought provoking and often scary, as on average, thousands of men are killed and injured every two pages. Tens of thousands of soldiers are killed and injured in a week. I was browsing through one of the operations and had to close the book and think to myself "Holy shit what a world this was"...
These two Stalingrad volumes are military masterpieces: They combined, with meticulous detail...essential record the combat operations that lead to the death and injury of millions of men in battle
I also recently expanded my collection of professional grade operational military histories 1941-1945 Eastern Front.
Quite honestly, I usually just kind of marvel at the writing styles and the stories and ideas in the books I like. I think my favourite recent read was ‘The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle’ by Murakami. It's written in a very laid-back style and though there’s not much of a ‘bigger picture’ element going on, he just has this really unique knack for taking vague and almost mundane settings and then incorporating all kinds of eccentric characters and quirky, fantastical elements in a way that never descends into ‘weird for the sake of weird’.
Sounds like it's going to take some doing.
Many years ago I read a book called ‘Dynamo’ by Andy Dougan (coincidentally, an abridged version of events was also posted here at BZ by Herve a good while ago). It’s a sporting story about a Ukrainian football/soccer team with WWII as its backdrop, perhaps vaguely comparable to that of Jesse Owens at the Berlin Olympics. Anyway, I remember being massively struck by the notion of Russian soldiers running into battle unarmed but carrying ammunition, so that they could pick up guns belonging to fallen colleagues. It’s mentioned only as a minor detail in the aforementioned book, but it's something that for some reason always stayed with me, and though I usually consider myself more of a fiction kind of guy, it's an area that I’d be interested in delving into a bit more one day.

By the way Andy, since I know you're something of a Batman fan, I was wondering if you're at all interested in the forthcoming 'Arkham: Origins' video game?
I did not hear of this until you mentioned it. There are clips of it on youtube. I watched the cutscenes of the first two games- AA and AC and I will do something similar for this one. As donbot knows, I’m a game ‘watcher’ rather than a player. These batman games are well done (although the fighting is very repetitive) and are loyal to the comics.
Here is something that you’d find interesting: This is the Azzerrello (who has wide knowledge of crime and wrote the impressive 100 bullets) Joker comic that was based off of Heath Ledger’s Joker. It’s good, and the artwork is top notch.

Thanks, very cool! I've read a few of the Batman books, most recently 'Year One' and 'The Dark Knight Returns' by Frank Miller, and been tempted to pick this one up too. ![]()

Oh, and I'm working on an explanation to the American football thing
.
That's great, thanks Joe! ![]()
*runs off to take a look*

Yeah, that's true, I think there's a lot that are actually written and produced with the specific aim of impressing the academy.
It does seem like artists have to work a little harder to give their bands unique names these days, and even more so to come up with a name that’s easy to find with online search engines. A few years ago, a great many fell into that trap of naming themselves vague things like Girls, Happy Birthday, Tennis and Teeth, all of which are virtually unGoogleable.
I guess that’s probably part of the reason why we’ve seen monikers like A$AP Rocky, Chvrches and Charli XCX spring up in the last year or two. I’ve noticed there are quite a few ‘Something & The Somethings’ type names cropping up as of late too, which as an added bonus, usually look great on t-shirts or (in some cases, I'm sure) tattooed on foreheads.
LOL @ the art of the Nina
.
Yeah, they are definitely unGooglelable
. Charlie XCX is definitely google friendly though as is 5ive :yuccky: . I've also always found the googleability of Fun strange seeing as how they come up so easy at face value even when there's also a Fun! if I'm not mistaken
. That pretension to please the academy is quite blatant and annoying. Generally a historical with some instruments playing is a good way to suck them in too
. Sure some are good, but I don't think they all are.

^ Who's Adaora? she has an interesting face.
Hi Michael,How've you been? ![]()

Hi Michael,How've you been?
Hey Mahi, I'm well thanks. Just got back from a little jaunt over to the Lake District. ![]()
How are you? ![]()

Good to have break even if it's short-kind of refreshment to the self. ![]()
I'm fine,thank you.On holiday for these 2 weeks,then I'll be back to work.
Btw,did you hear about who got the nom for best player in Europe,French footballer Frank Ribery.I'm surprised,I know Ribery.he's good but to be best.I know Ribery more from his candid appearances with his family than from his playing. ![]()
I don't know,I just can find one excuse for such choice which is that generaly this past year, not a single player was so distinct from the other one in Europe .

Sounds great, hope you enjoy the remainder of your holiday. I feel like I haven't seen you around BZ for a while, glad you're back. ![]()
Yeah, bit of a surprise that one, wasn’t it? They may have just wanted to break up the current stranglehold that Messi and Ronaldo seem to have on these types of awards, but all the same, I do think it’s a deserved recognition of Bayern’s superb treble winning season, of which Ribery was a big part. That being said, I’m not certain I’d call Ribery Bayern's best player, as I personally rate Schweinsteiger, Robben, Lahm and Mandzukic ahead of him. ![]()

Yes,for like 2 months I come and go shortly here,been busy with -work,family times,and lately went through so difficult times of sadness and sorrow{deaths of several dear people}
Glad that someone else agree about that.Right that exception they made but Messy and Ronaldo didn't deserve it too.And yes,Lahm is better for me than Ribery, and there goes Schweinsteiger too as you said.
I knoow you like Michelle Ouellette,I post in her thread and wonder what exactly you like about her?

Hey Michael
I love your ava lol. Go for the Nina Team! ![]()

I see. Hope you're doing okay. ![]()
It's very rare for a model to make an instant lasting impression on me, but as of late Michelle has done just that. I like that she has a 'beautiful and a bit haughty' thing going on, but mixed with the kind of laid-back charm one usually associates with the 'California Girl' archetype. Puts me in mind of a younger version of Gisele Bundchen. ![]()

Yours is pretty great too, though to my eternal shame, I still haven't seen 'Up'. ![]()

My sister has actually been trying to get me to watch it for a while, I told her I would when she watched 'Moonrise Kingdom'. Perhaps it's time I caved. ![]()

Good sir how have things been going on your side of the pond as of late? ![]()

lol Moonrise Kingdom. We watched it with FL, and when it ended, I was like "what the hell. Once again!" Then we watched various parts again and again, lol. That movie is totally my cup of tea ![]()
Oh, and Suzy is a hella femme fatale!!

Can't complain, sir!
How goes it in your neck of the woods?

It´s definitely worth it

Suzy kind of reminds me of a young Lana del Rey. ![]()
But I found that whole movie to be such a delight, as I do everything by Wes Anderson.
I marvelled at the way he made the characters seem almost completely unique to the island they lived on.
I might just give up and watch it then, as I'm almost certainly on a hiding to nothing with my sister anyway. She didn't even like 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' when I showed it to her. ![]()

What was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World about? From the look of it it seems like another teenage comedy with a hint of fantastic world (reason why I still have not seen it
). Maybe you can get me into the picture?
Suzy really does remind of young Lana
though I´m not a fan of Lana much, she seems to have one face for everything (and her mouth is scary). There was something about Suzy that got me stare at her, really captivating. The whole idea of the island was priceless. Also, Edward Norton and Bruce Willis are my favourite actors, and they did just amazing.
Do you have any other Wes Anderson movies to recommend? ![]()
