For most of my life I've wondered which one is worse of the joke ignored or the joke not recognized as a joke. It was always hard to determine based on real life because its harder to ignore people in person obviously. That said, based on our members, I prefer the joke not gotten because at least they tried. Hey Joe, what about making a new list?
I can help you
cause I was just thinking of the cliches in music videos, a list which could be called 'the different kinds of music videos (almost) every pop performer has in their videography'. What do you think? ![]()
This is what I've come up with so far ![]()
1. The ups and downs of being a celeb
Fame gives money, opportunities, applaud etc. Don't you feel like despite all the success it seems like the biggest pop stars have their 'I'm rich and happy but not really' music videos? They show all the glamour to just in the next scene show how ~lonely~ they feel. See: Brtiney's "Everytime" and Fergie's "Glamorous' (sorta)
2. Fan appreciation, a ka lazy music videos
When a particular singer achieves a higher point in their stardom.... looks like some of them feel the need to have a new music video every 3 months. That may kill quality I guess, so they usually release 4th or 5th single of their album shortly before the concert tour/new album and usually it's 'fan appreciation' thing-cameos from concerts, CDs signing, giving autographs etc. Semi-document. See: Rihanna's "Cheer to dat"
3. Minimalism is not always effective
Yes, "Single Ladies" had just 3 ladies dancing and yet it's known to be one of the best music videos of this decade. However just standing in front of some empty, usually white wall does not result in a good music video. See: the case with 90% of popstars
4. Advertising
Usually presenting new laptops or fancy new mobile phones, sometimes clothing companies. See: "I gotta feeling" by B.E.P. (pretty sure there is another popular music video with much more exposed product placement but I can't remember it right now)
5. Party hard
No explanation needed. Some 'artists' seem to rely on music videos were they always have a party.
Anything more to add, Joe? ![]()

^Indeed. You can't move for Byzantine temples and goat-herding children there... :|LOLI don't know the context, and just don't go there much since I don't know much about VS, but I would have laughed if I was there

You got nothing on our winters :morning: ![]()
Strangely I've started liking this weather, even though I can feel my feet freezing even though I wear thick tights AND socks and very warm winter shoes
it's so cold and in my neighbourhood there's almost no snow.
This (cold) weather, when I don't see much snow around but the sun can be shining quite strong makes me think about these photoshoots were models are in very thin clothes and the temperature is so low.... I thought photographers 'sacrifiece' models only for these photoshoots but I remember seeing this interview with Charlize Theron when she said she felt really cold during her latest Vogue US (cover) shoot because they did this in October by the sea. I don't know if she mentioned the temperature though....
Haha btw do you guys sometimes visit fashion/style blogs? It makes me roll my eyes when I see some of these bloggers being all like 'winter hit it so hard today I had to wear my new warm ZARA cardigan, which I paired with (obviously faux) fur scarf' yet even though it's so 'freezing' most of them seem to never wear hats
I get that it's for their little photoshoots, so maybe they take the hats of only for these few minutes when they have their photos taken.... or not? Either way I find it silly ![]()

I guess I'll give it another shot although it can only at best hope to come in second to that
. I must admit, the thread did serve a positive purpose for me because I didn't realize that I actually wouldn't change my looks to look like any celebrity

So, I watched your 'SuperBowl' Joe. Complicated game wasn't it? What with losing 2 points for throwing the ball to no-one, and that guy falling into the 'end zone' when he was supposed to, what, sit down on the line? I needed a big book of rules! I'm not saying our football is without it's bad points (mostly surrounding money - corrupt officials, oligarch owners, and prima donna players) but, aside from the 'offside' rule and indirect free-kicks when applicable, it's a remarkably simple game. It all comes down to scoring more than the other team. Whilst this is what was happening last night, a system in which you let the other team score in such a ludicrous fashion so you can have a chance seems a bit, well, reductive? That all said, a Hail Mary throw at the finale is good fun - but then when I watched it last year one team had won halfway through the fourth quarter and made the rest of it redundant. I just didn't think it could match a last minute tussle for an equaliser, with the goalkeeper up in the opposing team's box and that mad scramble of limbs and deflections in our football!
I know basketball is more your game, but I wondered what you thought?

Great list! I never really thought about the perils of being a star one in particular, though it is a big one now that I think about it.

Yeah, what's with this dj
I remember I saw that tweet from one female comedian (Natasha Leggero) which said 'I wish music would stop telling us to put our hands up'. And it's true :| oh btw, a few days ago I wanted to write about this FloRida song, that I keep confsuing it with one dance song and now I discovered that in fact FloRida used that dance song and just added a bit of himself there :| so basically there are 2 very similar song at the same time. FloRida's is called "Good feeling" and that dance tune is Avicii's "Levels" (the music videos is funny in a silly way).
Something to add to this list, although it rather applies to tween starlets 99% of time-a girl in glasses, acting awkwardly dreaming of a boy vs an evil, dark-haired girl, who wears low-cut dresses and no glasses obviously. The awkward girl at some point in time takes glasses on and finally brushes her hair and gets the guy at the prom lol. See: Taylor Swift "You belong with me"

Well I don't know whether I like basketball more or not. I just talk about basketball more here because there's slightly more people here to talk about basketball with outside of the thread that is as I find both the American football thread and the basketball thread largely intollerable
. I actually prefer the threads of sports I like less.
Anyway, I can defiinitely see how the game can look complicated but then again there is such a variety of positions to achomodate and because there are so many different types of players involved, strategy is much more important than it is in basketball. If you have one great player in basketball, you can potentially be an above average team and with two great players somewhat winging it, you can have a good team. Of course, they're hearts will be broken come playoff time, but that's still more success than one could hope for in the NFL at least.
As a result, most of the rules are for the sake of avoiding easy loopholes. For example, the two point play (safety) that you're referring to for one. Without that rule, he would have been allowed to just throw the ball anywhere just to avoid getting a traditional saftey (getting tackled in the opposing endzone). With the guy sitting down on the line, its more of a case by case basis thing. When you run the ball or get tackled in bounds, the clock runs. In light of that, some figured that if you went down as close as possible and ran the clock down as far as you could that would give the other team (who were particularly good at driving the field) less time to score and win. On the other hand, the touchdown put them up by four making a touchdown rather than field goal manditory and some would say that there was a slight chance that they could have missed the kick from there and been totally screwed.
I agree about the hail marry not being as exciting as the equivalent in yours, but then its not what I would call an equivalent since its more of a last resort desperation and they have such a low success rate. That could either add to the drama since its the last play and thus most watching at that point wouldn't look away or one could be more likely to write it off as a result of having such a small chance of success. I guess it depends on the interpretation. A 50 or more yard field goal against strong wind has a higher probability of success. That said, with the rule changes over the years to assist quarterbacking (the political implications of that are a different subject), driving the field has become much easier and scoring has increased as a result but the idea that turning the ball over is almost certain defeat adds to the drama in that case. I tend to assume teams are maybe more evenly matched than they really are in soccer and that probably adds some suspense for me on that end. Of course, its more difficult to score in soccer, so every score is more exciting whereas to me the plays in between are more exciting in NFL football. In both sports, I actually prefer the defense over the offense unlike most people.
What I love most about the game is...
- They probably have the greatest variety of top tier athletes. In the offensive and defensive lines, you have the strongest athletes in the world outside of professional power lifting. Not only that, but likely the most athletic 300 or more pounders anywhere in the world. Wide receivers, running backs, defensive backs, punt returners and kick returners are also the fastest athletes outside of track and field (of course, in soccer there's the most endurance outside of long distance). Linebackers are likely the fastest 250+ pound athletes in the world and defensive ends probably the fastest 260+ pounders in the world.
- Despite all of that, because there are so many players involved (over 50 players, around 20 positions with more than one player essential to most of them), unity and strategy are essential for success. The playbooks are even more complicated than the rules, making so many different possibilities.
- Unlike most fans, my favorite aspect is the battle in the trenches, which is the never ending battle between the offensive line and the defensive lines that is. Aside from Greco Roman Wrestling, I don't think there's anything like it in sports and its the only place I've seen such big guys with so much stamina.

^I have to say those big fellas are something else - I saw a few of them sweating before the game had even started!
Yes, short, sharp bursts I suppose, as opposed to our two legs of 45 minutes running about. Whilst I applaud both sets of athletic endeavour, I'm not personally that interested in that part of the game. I don't know about you, but I play (or at least played - not so much of late!) football for various amateur/school teams over the years and although the skill-set is obviously far inferior we can all still see the game out (just).
I don't know, I thought there were some good plays - and like you I was more impressed with the defensive teams - but it didn't compare to seeing Lionel Messi (Argentina's pride and joy) tear up an opposing team before slotting home a goal. For me, I like the flowing nature of the game - that it doesn't just stop so often. But I guess a lot of it is to do with what you've grown up with? I mean childhood memories and such make things that much more evocative I suppose? (Although the "flowing" thing is one of the reasons I fell in love with 'Australian Rules Football' - and since I've only been following that since the start of the millenium then I guess I've derailed my own hypothesis once again! <_< )
I forgot to mention that twice I heard the commentators saying that there were too many players on the field during the SuperBowl as well! How often does that oversight happen?

I always played offensive line in NFL football or power forward in basketball. It probably does have to do with what you grew up on and sentiment with most people. In most other countries soccer seems to be the most popular sport whereas its not that popular here. As to the tearing up the defense, I've always preferred a good goalie stop over the scoring machine types. I also have a perverse joy in seeing a good drive ended by someone kicking it back to the other side
.
Of course, I'm going to have to throw it out there that at face value, the game is on a drastic decline to me. The talent and everything is there of course, but the guys in the suits are ruining the game for my taste. It all started awhile ago, but took awhile to materialize the way it now has. When the sport was created, running was equally important as passing. Once the sport became more integrated, there has since been a lot of systematic restructuring of the game to increase the quarterback's importance. Over the last thirty years, over 95% of the rules passed to benefit a position have been in the quarterback's favor and the game has become unbalanced as a result. As a result of there being so many passing oriented rules, not only is the structure completely foreign to how it was created, since there are so many pro quarterback rules, there's more passing as a result and now its actually more important to have an elite cornerback (the player that guards a wide receiver) than an elite running back. Even defense is starting to sufer as a result (because they are more restricted in what they can do to quarterbacks and receivers) as there used to be a saying that defense wins championships and now there are more teams like the current Patriots team excelling in the playoffs despite having a second to last ranked defense (defense was their strong point when they last won though). Aside from that, extending how far a kicker can start the kickoff has almost taken the kickoff return out of the game and it was one of the most exciting elements to me. The increased emphasis of one position is quickly taking away one of the best aspects of the game and that was the fact that its not supposed to be an individual star's sport.
In basketball they've basically taken away handchecking (the use of physical force on defense outside of the post) and bumping cutters (those moving without the ball) as a result of the all time low scoring of the mid to late 90s but it hasn't had messed up the balance nearly as much.
As a result of the rule changes in the NFL, its becoming quarterback oriented almost to laughable proportions and its compromising the game more every year for me. So yeah, the quarterback focused rule changes are ruining the game for me, even though its still in my top 5, but has moved down from 1 to 2 at one point and then further down.

There is good and bad in being a staff member. Of course one pitfall for me is that pms used to be for me and now they're pretty much requests exclusively
. I guess the various pms and emails cursing me out could be counted as a pitfall for some, but I don't back down from confrontation in person, so internet gangsters can't rattle me much. Favorite Member Rivalries (Of Members that Don't Post Here)
9-10. - various one hit wonder squables.
8. phenobarbie vs. Theron - the way they would go back and forth about his results and different things was pretty funny.
7. Talisa vs. the Candice thread - some said that I should have banned her, but I thought she was workable and was able to get through to her and she reformed. That said, I thought she was pretty funny myself and partially regret that the sensitivity of the members causes us to miss out on really great material.
6. Ophelia Immortal vs. Stamaholic - this one wasn't heated, but was no less interresting. Stamaholic is a British woman who loves T&A and is very vocal about weight. Quite naturally, she and Ophelia were the opposite on a lot of issues and when she would say such and such is too skinny, Ophelia would say she was that size. On the other end, if Ophelia said her boobs are too big, Stamaholic would say hers were even bigger. It wasn't heated by any means, but it was kindof funny in a way.
5. phenobarbie vs. Ariesdior - the great thing about this one is the fact that I've gotten reports telling me they were the same person and had to explain how they weren't. Aside from that different complaints about both for the same reasons so when they actually fell out with each other, it was kindof funny I must admit because it both proved they weren't the same person and it was kindof funny in general.
4. Penny vs. Jal - Penny is the ultimate friend in that if a friend is under attack, she comes to the rescue. When Jal decided to dis RJTyler in his milestones thread by calling him a spammer, she unleashed her fury exclaimated by a huge rotating f**k you gif. I think they reconciled, but that was still pretty funny.
3. mbinebri vs. Nemeside - I think they started off with him defending Marisa and from there, they soon realized that they disagreed on pretty much everything.
2. mbinebri vs. Sweetandlow - something about the subject of SI would always stir up the bad blood between these two. The arrangement would usually go that she would make a long post, he would find a sentence he disagreed with, quote that part and then they'd be at it. My favorite exchange is when she told him she had him on ignore and they argued about the merit of putting people on ignore ![]()
.
1. AnaBBarrosFan vs. vanessaaa - Ah AnaBBarrosFan, what can I say? She's definitely a top 10 favorite member of mine and she's also the only member whose bad side I'd hate to be on. As to these two, when vanessaaa said that her tastes sucked in reference to a vote or comment she made, she just let it all hang out about how much she didn't think she was cute and to never talk to her again.
Favorite Model Haters
I find most pretty annoying and others are funny. These are my favorite ones.
10. vanessaaa (Kate Upton)
9. COP11 (Adriana Lima) - I don't think she realizes that she's said her name more than anyone else in her thread
. Either way, there are many Lima haters but she's my favorite.

7. Michellabella (Lily Cole)
6. Nemeside (Marisa Miller)
5. mbinebri (Doutzen Kroes)
4. Talisa (Candice Swanepoel)

^Oh, Messi is no "scoring machine type"!I've always preferred a good goalie stop over the scoring machine types.
It's not necessarily about scoring either - it's the cutting through players that's impressive. A lot of his runs don't end up in a goal. That this one did is just an extra. And you have to appreciate that the opposition here (Real Madrid) are one of the best teams in the world too, so these defenders are supposed to be at the very top of the game...
^Do you think this is a deliberate 'star-making' thing? I did notice how often they focussed on Manning and Brady even when they weren't on the field. Other players seemed to be actually winning the game, but they weren't being given anywhere near enough credit as things panned out.As a result of the rule changes in the NFL, its becoming quarterback oriented almost to laughable proportions and its compromising the game more every year for me. So yeah, the quarterback focused rule changes are ruining the game for me, even though its still in my top 5, but has moved down from 1 to 2 at one point and then further down.
